Well, I guess the secret's out now...

Or I am. Or something like that.

I just got home from Syracuse Pride 2013. I managed to get there just in time to catch the beginning of the parade, even though they had to move the starting point so I had to hoof it a bit to find out where it was. That was okay since it is a peach of a day here in CNY, sunny and 75 after days of cold rain.

I was standing on the street corner where the parade turned to go into the park where the festival was being held. There was a good crowd right there, and kitty-corner were some born again heckler types acting foolish. The hecklers were easy targets to be made fun of by the crowd and no one seemed to care.

In the third or fourth group of the parade was one of my co-workers.

I've worked with T fairly closely for probably ten or eleven years now. She's the secretary in one of our municipal offices and has been out as long as I've known her. She came around the corner with her group and we spotted each other about the same time. So I walked into the street, said hello & she gave me a hug. I walked with her for a ways then stepped aside to watch the rest of the parade. We met up later on the festival grounds and chatted for a while. Her sig. other was there as well, someone I've met and talked with on several occasions.

I stayed at the festival a couple of hours. I walked around, talked with a bunch of people, got hit on a couple of times, bought one of those cheesy, cheap rainbow rubber bracelets which I wore all day, listened to some music and saw some drag acts. Smiling the whole time. Then I went over to the mall, went shopping, and caught the bus home.

Will this get out at work? Yup. There's two or three of the 'girls' in the offices that I know about. We've all known each other for years so I'm sure something will be said. And gossip in an office travels at warp factor 5 or better.

Do I care? No. I'm not going to go around advertising anything but I'm not going to hide who I am any more either.

I have the strangest feeling of being more at peace with myself than I've been in a long time.

There's no real point to all this except for the fact that I felt like I had to tell someone. So thanks for listening guys.

    How was your day?

    Peace.

    Mike

    Congrats.
Glad you had a good time.

On the flip side, you don't think anyone suspected? You're almost fifty, single, and take good care of yourself.

"..got hit on a couple of times"

You were probably wearing too many clothes. You need to show off that ripped body more. icon_wink.gif

@Macaque: Yes, I think people probably suspected something. But they also knew that I'd dated & had relationships with women in the past too.

@xrichx: Cargo shorts & Nikes(sans shirt,of course) was the least I could get away with at this venue- there were children there too after allicon_biggrin.gif

    You go, guy!

None of my co-workers know I'm gay yet, even though I'm not in the closet. I'm making a game of it to see who can figure it out first ^_^

That's a nice story. You never know who you're going to run into at gay bars or events. About 15 years ago I ran into an old high-school friend at a local gay event. We hadn't seen each other since graduation in 1970. Neither of us at that time had any idea that the other was gay. We renewed our friendship, and I see him now about 5 or 6 times a year at social events. We've also renewed acquaintance with 3 other old high-school classmates who've turned out to be gay. Life is funny.

Thanks for the input. I kind of had the feeling that I'd run into somebody I knew there eventually- I know a lot of people in the L side of the community.

Congrats on getting to that place where you shake the closet monkey off your back. It won't all be roses, but it will be YOUR life now, not something you're trying to maintain to keep your life and self hidden. Serious hugs, man. Wish I'd been there to ogle you, hit on you and to just have the benefit of meeting a great guy like you.

Great Pride season story, and welcome to the peaceful place you've found. Surviving the pre- don't-ask-don't-tell era in the USAF, surviving the don't-ask-don't-tell era in the USAF, which, believe it or not was far worse; now being just two mature gay men out of the military and "out" in the world, the welcome is warm-hearted and with pride at your giant step in your life's journey. Be well and enjoy your life to the fullest extent of your ability.
