As someone who grew up with this "meat", our family didn't have a whole lot and cheap meals with Spam (poor mans ham) were the norm, but I can afford to eat better now but I find myself drawn back to Spam every once in a while, sliced fried Spam or Spam and eggs or Spam sandwich or Spam cook offs around the country

How do you like your Spam? or Spam Lite?

Spam musubi is the best Spam food ever. I like Spam omelet once in a while. But Spam musubi is something I can eat everyday.

^ This. i haven't had spam musubi but I've eaten spam sushi style before and it was delicious. Spam & eggs is classic though, and incredibly easy to make.

I cook a ton of stuff in Spam. You can judge, but you'd be begging me for more of the best meal you've ever had in your life.

I'm actually allergic to Spam. :/ Canned meat in general.

I can't eat Spam, corned beef hash, vienna sausages, etc. without breaking out into awful, ugly hives!

Not that I'm missing out on a whole lot, I don't think.

    But still. That sucks.

LOL, haven't actually touched the stuff since tenderfoot scout days. I've heard that it's like, the Hawaiian national food though. I've been trying different canned meats lately, to stock on the boat. The best bet: learn to fish better!

Growing up, I experienced basically the same problem from a different angle. We didn't have much, but we had to deal with the whole carcass. All that stuff that gets ground up innocuously in spam (or big macs) we had to confront directly in the freezer. icon_eek.gif Tongue. Brain. Liver. It's a wonder I'm not vegetarian.

I've never had spam. I can't get over how much sodium it has even the lite version. Keep in mind the nutrient content is based of a 2 oz serving size... each can contains approx 6 servings worth!

Why Do Hawaiians Love Spam So Much?

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/Menuism/why-do-hawaiians-love-spam-so-much_b_1901306.html

the island's love affair with Spam began in World War II, when GIs were served the salty luncheon meat because it didn't require refrigeration and had a long shelf life. The Hormel Corporation, which manufactures Spam, provided 15 million cans to Allied troops every week. Between 1941 and 1945, Hormel had shipped over 100 million pounds overseas.

Oh man I haven't had that in years! The only recipe for spam I can remember is pan fried spam with canned pineapples.

Well, keep in mind that originally, it was basically a survival ration. And a pretty good solution for what it was supposed to do at the time.

"pork with ham" Isn't that sorta like the same thing as "twink with booty?" icon_razz.gif

Spam does bring back memories of growing up. Once a week we had it.Tastes great just sliced and fried up nice and warm. Don't try and take it for lunch. Yuck warmed up!! I still have it once in awhile. Brings back memories and is still good. Maybe not great for you but nevertheless something special.

I don't know if I've ever eaten SPAM®. My dad always railed against it because they got a lot of it when he was in the Navy. So when I was at the grocery store yesterday I bought some; the SPAM® Less Sodium and the SPAM® Hickory Smoke. Christ, there are 18 varieties of SPAM®; 10 if you only count the standard can shape: http://www.spam.com/varieties/

The Nutrition Facts box on these is a hoot.

6 servings per little can. A single serving is 25% of your daily values of fat. So two thirds of a can, 8 ounces, 4 slices, is 100% of your daily values for fat. Salt is even worse at 33% of your daily values of salt per serving; 3 slices and you're maxed out on salt.

I hope I don't end up loving this stuff. I already have 2 other guilty pleasures; Hormel corned beef hash in the can (swimming in grease after heating it in the microwave), and Kentucky Fried Chicken, original recipe, 2 thigh meal. I try to limit myself to once a month for each of those.

Disgusting. That's just like that potted meat that comes in a can.
