whereas almost NO kids with gay parents have parents behind bars. Awesome reason to outlaw heterosexual child rearing. lol.

This is no surprise but it is totally unacceptable. The "land of the free and home of the brave" seems obcessed with incarcerating as much of its population as possible. I think it is time to start incarcerating all these paranoid, control freak politicians both democrat and republican.

The rate is even higher in minority communities. Blame America's lame war on drugs.

The rate of imprisonment would be lower if there were no laws against drugs like marijuana used to arrest and imprison people.

These numbers are shocking. It's deplorable that so many African Americans are being racially profiled, and the numbers of hispanic people in prison are also a reflection of an utterly broken beyond belief criminal justice system. I blame the war on drugs, but the problems go much deeper. It's xenophobia and racism.

Has anyone who's watched the show Breaking Bad noticed that the plot line seems like an excuse to depict gratuitous violence against latinos? The white male characters on that show execute droves of latinos, and it's just disturbing on a certain level. It's supposed to be a violent action show, but the racial bias is obvious and it overshadows the realism of the fiction. It's pretty much propaganda, because it depicts the white characters as individuals whose lives matter, and the hispanic characters are pawns who are killed as quickly as they're introduced to the cast.

You are seriously blaming people's criminal behaviour on evil white people?

What is with the politically correct obsession of white people expected to hate themselves?

The Human Rights Watch has the gall to criticise the US and Australia over things that most of the rest of the world do far worse.

Prison is SUPPOSED to be uncomfortable. It's SUPPOSED to not be a nice place to go. It's purpose is to discourage criminal behaviour, and the dumb Leftists (not all) want to make a cushioned and comfortable place?

Perhaps the message should be to not disobey the law and you won't go to the prison. Simple. Punish those who don't get it.

Politinerd, did you know that in the US there are some older prisoners that were jailed some time ago because of things that are no longer considered jaileable crimes?

For a libertarian, you sure have some authoritarian leanings.

You don't know what Libertarianism is anyway, so what's the point? It is to allow liberty as long as it does not impinge on the rights of others. Those who must be punished. If it unjustly so, then address that problem. If not, then discomfort is the main objective of a jail
