    Russia Passes Anti-gay Law

Is it time to start calling the whole of Eurasia a "shithole" now?

This is just valid proof that Russia remains very primitive minded when it comes to acceptance of other groups of people who do not reflect "traditional Russian values and culture". This country just took a gigantic step backward, how horribly sad.icon_sad.gif

Question -- President Carter pulld the the U.S. out of the Olympics (1976 Summer?) when Russua invaded Afganistan. Does this move require the same kind of protest? Just askin'.

That is thanks to the primitive minded Russian Orthodox Church. This is exactly what happens when you allow religion to strongly influence political decision making.

What would be more effective is for global corporations to protest/boycott Russia over this. The president has a lot on his "fucking" plate right now and our pro gay rights movement, although increasingly momentous, is still very far from over. You can still lose your job for being gay in my state and 28 other US states, for example. I'd like OUR president to continue to help US get completely over the goal line first. Then we can save the world. I'm being selfish here, though.

Some Eurasian countries are actually progressive but the most part that region is actually becoming regressive.

The reason behind my question was that many in the gay community are compelled to call other parts of the world "shitholes" when a country or several countries in those parts of the world pass homophobic legislation, so I was curious as to whether Eurasia was, by their own definition, a "shithole".

It is a human habit to overly romanticize an issue. I think most places are shitholes to a certain degree because the world works on patriarchy. Gay rights and even women rights directly challenges that so there is bound to be an unfavourable environment, both legally and socially which could also breed all sorts of economic problems. Before I moved to Canada, I always felt that there is no homophobia in a country like that. It was after sometime being there, I realized that the west has its own definition of homophobia. Even though for the most part I think it is a great, tolerant country. No matter how much we progress there would always be a certain level of discrimination around for minorities be it on the basis of sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender or whatever because the way humans have come to understand working of the world is that majority dominates minority. Laws can be implemented to challenge that but bigotry (one of the most natural emotions to human beings) cannot be outlawed.
