    Salt Lake Tribune

"By ruling that supporters of Proposition 8 lacked standing to bring this case to court, the Supreme Court has highlighted troubling questions about how our democratic and judicial system operates. Many Californians will wonder if there is something fundamentally wrong when their government will not defend or protect a popular vote that reflects the views of a majority of their citizens.

"In addition, the effect of the ruling is to raise further complex jurisdictional issues that will need to be resolved.

"Regardless of the court decision, the church remains irrevocably committed to strengthening traditional marriage between a man and a woman, which for thousands of years has proven to be the best environment for nurturing children. Notably, the court decision does not change the definition of marriage in nearly three-fourths of the states."

    — Michael Otterson, spokesman for the LDS Church

After the ruling, one of the lawyers explained that if the court had found any harm had been sustained by the voters due to our ability to marry, that alone would have given them standing.

So this is not a case of the state refusing to protect the voters; rather, this is an example of the protection against the tyranny of the masses.

There is no problem with them strengthening "traditional" marriage (100 wives, 1 husband) in their church, the problem is when they try to enforce their church laws on the general public who do not hold their same perverted views.

Yes, that's what they believe. Of course, Christians believe his mom was a virgin and he walked on water.... Soooo, it's kind of like the Incredible Hulk v Spider-Man, i.e. fantasy fiction.

I could care less if people want to believe in hooha, but both Christians and mormons are known to be opponents of gay rights, which is why I feel inclined to point out that Santa Claus is the only worthy deity.

Santa is awesome! Growing up he was the man I wanted to marry the most: An old rich white man who favors the young and gives you gifts and you don't have to sleep with him just feed him cookies and be present.

Unfortunately, the "cookie" thing is a euphemism for the chocolate star-shaped cookies sold in all the grocery stores during the holidays... hence the term "chocolate starfish."

I thought chocolate starfish referred to the anus.

..." traditional marriage between a man and a woman, which for thousands of years has proven to be the best environment for nurturing children"...

Hmm I wrote an essay over the childhood effects of the differences between same-sex parents and opposite-sex parents, all of the sources found that the kids raised by same-sex parents were no different than the ones raised by opposite sex parents. And in some cases the kids with same sex parents turned out to be better.

All I can say is this.........in my experience, LDS people have been very, very nice to me while talking with me about their church, and actually trying to recruit me. During the period where I've not yet said "No thanks" they couldn't be more congenial. At the exact point where I let them know I would not be interested in joining their church, their "friendship" became something very negative, and I was cut off.

Just my own experience, and I'll bet others have seen this in their own lives when dealing with LDS people.

Really you shouldn't make snap judgments about people based on a group they associate with. I have friends who are LDS and are nothing but supportive of me and the choices I have made. Some of these same friends actively support the fight against Prop 8. Everyone has the right to believe what they want to believe. If we were all the same and believed the same things the Internet would implode from boredom.

That's the psychology of any cult (religion). They have a "those who are not with us are against us" attitude, which is why they respond so defensively to atheists.

Atheists on the other hand think religion is fiction. They don't hate religious people, but they wonder why people believe in magic.

I'm agnostic. I don't believe in magic, but I enjoy the search for it.icon_wink.gif

Hard to take seriously anything from people who believe an angel named Moroni appeared to a known grifter and told him where to find some golden plates.

santa is kind of evil though. in addition to being an adulterer, and owning slaves, he has his own PRISM program too. Although I wouldnt mind having access to his list of "naughty" boys.

Nothing about the divorce rate among straights. Nothing at all. Interesting!
