I know I'm still kind of new to rugby culture and all that, but...uh...the World Cup Opening Ceremonies...um....I don't really get it.

Why did they have yellow hearts on their chests and blue balloon hats? And the shoulder spikes? Was someone channeling a drag queen from the 80s?

Is it a French thing?

Yes, yes it is. The French are an ineffable bunch. Don't try to understand, just axt aux fait and talk about the symbolism in fairly vague terms.

Ineffable, haven't heard that in a while. But honestly the French are subject to the same vices and weakness for kitsch as the rest of us. I mean why would you need shops dedicated to stuff from Provence in Lyon -- what 2 hrsor less to the real thing at most? Or the fascination with those little plastic gomes? Now really how far is that from a pink flamingo?

That's a wonderful story about the Samoan team! Thanks, I hadn't heard that, iscottosx
