Every decade or even give years America selects or seems to select a black actor who is held up as the symbol of the respectable Black man as if we need to be taught how to fit in, lol. They are in everything having to do with black people or whenever Hollywood wants to use a black person in a major film or TV show. The timeline goes like this:

    Sidney Poitier
    Bill Cosby
    Morgan Freeman
    Denzel Washington
    Will Smith
    Tiger Woods
    Taye Diggs

So who is our current black man?

There's also always a black woman but she tends to dominate for a longer period of time. Their timeline goes like:

    Diahann Carroll
    Jackee Harry
    Phylisica Rashad
    Oprah Winfrey
    Whoopi Goldberg
    Angela Bassett
    Halle Berry

Oprah and Halle both had a reign for about a solid five to seven years however although not overshadowed they shared with Whoopi and Regina respectively. Right now our current black woman is Kerry Washington but she has a runner up in Viola Davis. Americas black woman tends to overlap unlike the black man who has definite periods of reign and it's totally unambiguous. The black womans reign is a lot more cloudy.

Actually there is a huge backlash to Kanye right now. People do not like him as much and mainstream media and Hollywood is leading a definite rejection as of right now. He seems to be okay with mainstream rejection and though he's talked about a lot he is no symbol or role model.

I know but America seemed intent on making him black and believe it or not most of his hype and endorsements came from being a clean cut and respectable 'black' man.

We are only about 13 percent of the population us blacks however you gotta count the biracials like Obama who claim their black side but not their white side.

We call it the one drop rule in America. Even the slightest ounce of African blood and you can claim to be black and on consensus forms that is exactly what many of them do. Some call themselves multiracial on paper but black otherwise. People like Mariah Carey would be considered white in other countries but here she can claim being black and no one questions it.

Also more I did not include Samuel L. Jackson or Tyler Perry. Mr. Jackson although in a lot of movies has never been used by mainstream media as an exemplary example of a black man or what one should be. Tyler Perry also is more popular with blacks and mainstream Hollywood does not really care for him since he is 1) a primarily independent filmmaker with millions to make more of his own movies. He isn't dependent on the Hollywood machine. 2) he's a closeted gay and very apparently anti gay if his movies are any indication.

you do realize that the one drop rule has to do with jim crow laws and segregation right?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plessy_v._Ferguson

the one drop rule was used as a basis to determine if someone should be discriminated against. it's NOT something that is factual.

I know but it's effects are still felt today. Black people still use this rule today. Hence why a black man like Obama is able to be touted by himself and others as our first black president. Despite him having a white mother.

That is a good list OP. Just to point out something, Tiger Woods is not fully Black, he's half Thai/Asian. Lol he has a thing for white chicks with all the recent scandals. And he's not an Actor either.

I like Angela Bassett, she's a very strong actress, loved her in the Tina Turner Movie. I do like Lawrence Fishburne too, he played Ike and Morpheus in the Matrix. I like Halle Berry but she's more like a pretty face, her acting is all right. Lol, I love Oprah, so sad now that her show is gone. I wrote Oprah one time in an email and she actually replied back!

This thread somehow reminds me of the To Wong Foo movie, lol, Wesley Snipes was great and so Fierce in it.

I know but like I said before most of his appeal to mainstream America was partially because he was an upstanding seemingly black man excelling in a very white sport. And especially after his affair they were touting the racial angle about another black athlete lusting after white women. Add conservative voices saying black women should be offended we weren't a part of his harem and there you go.

White people will be the minority in America by 2040, and the minority in the UK by the time I am in an old man.

I have great pride knowing that I might possibly live to witness the postracial west, with man being his whole for the first time in eons.

The present America sees Obama as a black man, the Future America will see Obama as a man, to paraphrase the great Sidney Poitier.

I have a feeling that race may still be an issue but more so because people are becoming distasted with whiteness because of what one political party is doing to alienate voters who otherwise would align themselves with the quite race. Many latino voters are racially white but will never call themselves such and this is gonna carry on into the next generation. Pretty soon people will come up with any reason to avoid being called white.

I really don't see anyone else as impactful or talented as Denzel in this generation. Will Smith is no where near as talented as D or the ones before him. The closest we have is Chewtel Ejiofor but he doesn't get as many parts as he deserves.
