What charitable and philanthropic organizations do you support with your time and/or money? I've worked with Special Olympics for years, including coaching a young man til he became an adult and moved away to live in a group home. I think I got a lot more from him than he did from me. I'm a sucker for any children-related charity and will participate in any "-thon", race, walk, rope jumping, tug of war or anything else someone comes up with to raise money for local children's charities. I'm interested in what other organizations people support and why you chose those particular ones.

My bf and I have supported the Sierra club with financial contributions, Toys for Tots, local food shelf, donations to Goodwill. I've also volunteered at Pride events and other GLBT outreach. You're right that you get more out of it than you put into it. It's just a wonderful feeling to help out in the community.

I volunteer my medical services for both the Firemen and police training camps--just selfless like that.

I like to volunteer at humanitarian things like soup kitchens and bake sales at church.... I also am involved with things to help underprivileged kids and at-risk youth. .

I give to Planned Parenthood, Americans for Responsible Solutions (tougher gun laws), OFA, HRC, and donate clothes to my local battered women's shelter. I don't get much time to volunteer, but when I do get time, I choose to use it in political activism - Occupy LA was the last time, and Keystone XL may be my next action. Nothing like direct action to get inspired that the world can change.
