Jack Monroe makes some excellent points about this frequently asked question.

"Where's the straight Pride? Why do the gays get a special day to themselves? It's not fair."

If I had a pound for every time I was asked that question, well, I'd have quite a few pounds:

Mother's Day came and went. Father's day came and went. I was 6 and asked Mom,
    "When is Children's Day?"

"Every day is Children's Day." she said, and so I think this goes for straight people, too. icon_wink.gif

Haha... remember getting this same speech from my Mom. And agree that it applies in this case too.

I think it would be hilarious if there were such a thing, and certainly wouldn't take any umbrage. Hell, I'd go for the spectacle.

I was going to say, "Isn't that the Superbowl Halftime Show?"

Then I realized that ever since the '96 performance where Diana Ross exited by helicopter, we've really been running that show more often than not.

It exists in Mexico, it's April 30th.

No wonder I loved Mexico so much when I was a kid.

And why is there no white pride? Or white history month? Straight white people got nothing. It's so unfair.

My mom would say the exact same thing, and it was the first thing I thought of when I read the forum title!

Well ... they actually do. The thing is 'white people' make up a huge range of different ethnicities. So there are Italian parades, and German parades, and Greek parades, and Spanish parades, Irish parades and even Basque parades.

The Swedish get IKEA, I guess. There is a 'Sons of Norway' Hall in Berkeley.

Point being that we do celebrate the contributions of various 'white' ethnicities to our culture. We also have pan-European cultural events, like the International Day we had at my high school. And that's a good thing too. Also, March is 'Irish-American History Month'.

So the larger point is people can stop bitching about not having 'white pride' events. Since we do and all.

[Edit: We admittedly don't have 'white pride' events in the sense that we falsely lump all light-skinned people into one cultural grouping in service to the idea of purposefully insulting other people's experience in the US, regardless of how inaccurate that concept is. If that's what you're looking for ... well ... fuck you.]

Then maybe we shouldn't exclude straight people from things! gay clubs, LGBT!!, gay events "50 shades of gay" gay runs, art shows for the mostly gay art... We deserve the discrimination we get.

The glbt events and places I have been to don't exclude straight people. I'm not sure but I really doubt that it would even be legal to do so in California.

I know that there are members on RJ that don't want straight people here. But that would not bother me either. I have more straight friends that gay friends....not by choice...that is just how it turned out.

If the white people did a parade for being white it would be called racist and in bad taste icon_rolleyes.gif

Straight people did one too it would be labeled prejudice

Why don't they have lesbian pride separate? Gay pride is really just mostly men and men dressed up as women lol

    Dude,
You must have been sleeping in history class. It was the Gay SA that brought Adolf Hitler to power.

Straight people don't need a pride parade because they have never been put into a position of feeling shamed for being who they are. If they had treated us the same from day 1, we wouldn't feel the need to have a "Hey, fuck you, we're gay and we're going to live like the rest of you" parade. Straight people have missed the point on everything. As usual.

I once asked my Father when Mother's Day was. He told me Mother's day is nine months after Father's Day...icon_rolleyes.gif
