Financial woes...

So I'm a student doing an unpaid internship (although they cover transportation, which means A LOT in NYC) which will eventually turn into a paid fellowship in another four months or so. I rely on windfalls from my school (such as a $3,000 refund they owed me for overcharging on tuition, and hopefully, I will receive a TAP disbursement at the end of August) to survive at this point. I had a part time job for a year and I stupidly quit it.

I also work for a friend in Jersey on the weekends and that pulls in a decent amount but between rent and food and debt payments ($2K consumer and $12.1K student, which I have paid down from $14.5K) and paying $30 round trip to get to Jersey and miscellaneous expenses, I'm stretched!

I feel I have gotten lazier since I quit my part time job at the Frick in January, and actually I work a lot more, scrambling to get those bills paid! I work odd gigs when I can get them. Maybe I will get a temp job...

I am not innocent though. I spend a decent amount of money a month (around $60) on beer at Gym Bar but it is my only entertainment expense and it is heavily subsidized.

Just ranting and it would be interesting if other guys shared their financial woes icon_sad.gif

I really don't stress about money much anymore, but it is interesting to wonder how I actually survive ;(

Can't you defer your student loans if you are working less than 30 paid hours a week?

Sorry to hear that handsome. My pocket has taken a hit as well. I quit a corporate job and am currently struggling to get my own business/product on the market. My release date was supposed to be July 1st, but I've sinced pushed it forward by about two weeks due to unexpected hurdles. In the meanwhile, I'm living off the money I have saved up from a failed business with an ex-partner who I discovered to be a coke head with warrants for his arrest.

If your loans are subsidized (which means they are not accruing interest while you are in school), you should not make any payments until you graduate.

If the loans are unsubsidized, it is really up to you if you want to make the monthly payments. You'll save some money in the long-run but be broke in the meantime. Since your loan amounts are not that great, I think it would be best to defer payment until you have more money. Remember, you can make payments on them at any time, even if they are in deferment.

I've started paying off the (originally) $5,200 unsubsidized loan (now down to $4,700) icon_biggrin.gif

Oh man, sorry to hear about the cokehead partner. I'm sure you will get your business going.

Is anyone else gonna give a rundown of their debts/finances? I know "gay affluence" is largely a myth? Most of y'all are, no doubt, broke fuckers. icon_biggrin.gif

Cut your only entertainment of $60/month.
    You earn entertainment through affection.

Your naked, clean, caressing body and this song is all the entertainment there is.

    Somebody should be into you.

I sang this and people were fainting and loving it. One of my best performances. See the picture in my profile when I'm at my youngest?

You're kind of handsome like me, Bro.
    Gimme those 7 digits.

Yep. I'm part of the 'Living in NYC and I'm broke' club. I work part time for Best Buy and make money from odd gigs too..when I can get them that is. Things have been very tight. Been getting help from home but man, I so want to be self-sufficient.

Most companies with unpaid internships are breaking both state and federal labor laws. If you're doing *any* useful work that the company actually benefits from, you're most likely entitled to at least minimum wage.
