Gay Camp-In on the California State Capitol

Hey so in light of the current situation with prop 8 I think it is important for us to be out and seen. The rallys that have been going on are awesome and I think it should continue. What does everyone think about organizing a "camp-in" on the state capitol. Gays and lesbians from all over California descending on the state capitol with tents and camping gear and having a non-violent protest showing our support for our rights. I think it could be a really powerful statement, especially if it can be done in a unified method en mass. With all of the mass communication avenues we have at our disposal it should not be hard to put something like this together. I think it is important to show people that we are not going to just accept this and also show them that we as a diverse community of gay and lesbian people are all willing to stand together for this cause. Any thoughts?

I think instead of being seen, not being seen may make a greater impact.

I call for a strike, hit'em where it hurts.

I actually like this idea much more than any of the others that I've heard.... I just don't think it is very wise to fight hatred with even more hatred (as some others have suggested). Personally, I feel a "kiss in" is in order at State Capitols across the country... both from the stand point that this is a much larger issue than what has happened in California or Florida, and that it's a very peaceful way of getting our point across... and it shouldn't be limited to just those of us who are gay, but our supporters as well.

I totally agree. Fighting hatred with more hatred never serves to solve anything. I think if people see that we are families too that do the same things they do it could help further education of our cause. i think if gay parents pulled their children out of school and camped and people could see these families that they are affecting it could really go light years for convincing the court that it is wrong. all hatred comes from a place if ignorance...i dunno.

I dont like the idea of a "kiss in." I would prefer to keep sex out of this and just face it as a civil rights issue. If you start kissing, that is all people are going to see...the kissing.....and not the people or the issue.

The camp-in sounds good. Civil disobedience Ghandi and MKL style would be good. A good ole "Selma" march on Sacramento might draw the parallel and remind people....esp. black people....that we are talking about civil rights here. .....and someone might want to point out that once a majority can start voting away the rights of a minority, beware! Can you say "slavery"?

But I truly dont think this will stand in the courts. California will have to call a constitution convention to remove the equal protection clause in their constitution. However, a little public demonstration plays well with judges to let them know people really care.

How about both? Make it a camp-in/strike that lasts through the night and the work day. Kinda wish I was in California right now...

We need, as a community to boycott the whole economy, I mean, buy nothing, see no movies, dont go out to eat (bills, rents, gay businesses and food are exceptions). Have friends over, BBQ, hang out, converse....even turn off your mind numbing TV and have people over for games and socialize like humans did for eons.

Gays always over look their economic importance and it could, for now, be one of their best allies.

Start right now..Don't buy anything non essential. If you travel, travel and spend your money in places that support gay rights - go to Canada, Spain, Boston, Hawaii, etc.

Through this we can literally shut down companies like Urban Outfitters (whose CEO supported Yes on icon_cool.gif. I know liberal straight friends who are on board.

The state legislature does not even have a back up plan, they can't even get the energy to meet up and pass a more comprehensive Civil Union bill that might quiet us down for a while.

I have been doing this. I spent my vacation money and time this year in Spain, and on the Atlantis cruise. My money goes only to gay friendly business and I research to find out who is worthy of my money.
