Younger guys feel less vulnerable, more invincible and likely take more risks because if that; 2. HIV is promoted as a chronic or manageable disease, rather than the health crisis it is; 3. Most younger guys have not seen end-stage friends so have no reference to what can happen; 4. Whites have more/better access to health care and information; 5. Whites have more priveledge around ability/acceptance of coming out, so are more likely to support around gay issues, which can reduce some risk-taking choices. 6. There are many other things I could list here, but the fact remains that young men are screwing without condoms and getting infected - and I don't know what we can do about it. I was an HIV educator in Cleveland in the 1990s and I really felt a few years ago that we missed an opportunity to create some cultural norms around safe choices in sexual behavior back then. Recently, and especially after reading this and other articles saying similar things, I'm not sure we can create norms around healthy sexual choices that last past a current generation. I told you I was going to sound old and curmedgeonly... I just wish we could turn back time - but so does Cher. Be safe guys-

I have been lucky that I have only lost three friends to Aids and that's three to many. Modern Meds. Produces a strange duality in that we are living longer( by we I mean our communities) So the younger generation has not seen men who were once strong a virile waste away literally before your eyes. They have never seen the how AIDS or HIV decease can and will rob you of your dignity. When that changes, then their attitude will change. They have not adopted the mind-set. "Treat every partner that you do not know like they are positive and or What you do now can kill you later"! They last thing we want is for a mutated version of the virus to break-out. It will be the 80's and early 80's all over again. We do not want to go back that there, we are still trying to recover from those losses! Cheers! Phoenix

I dont know about NYC, but here in South East Asia, even sex workers are aware of the danger they are facing. Just like other guy in this forum, I grow up during the 80's. AIDS is no laughing matter. I have see the faces of Rock Hudson (all skinny and sickly)when he do Dynasty, just before the disease killed him. Performing oral without a condom is all the risk I am willing to take. I gonna have fun but in the safe way.

Increased use of recreational drugs, barebacking, and never seeing friends die of AIDS are all factors. When I came out in the mid-1980s we were terrified of contracting HIV. Twenty years ago it was seen as a virtual death sentence.

However, assuming you practice safer sex, it doesn't matter whether or not you are circumcized. I realize that in the USA, that's circumcized penises are the norm (ironic since it's a surgical procedure to alter the natural state of the penis, but that's a topic for another forum). As for promoting it in Africa, there are still issues surrounding that -- including general infection of the surigical wound (due to unsanitary conditions in the geographical area), and men not waiting until they are fully healed before they have unprotected sex (thus potentially exposing themselves/others to the virus).

Since I too am a New Yorker living in the East Village, I can say that only the white men I have met don't want to talk, date, or kiss either. They just want to get fucked. I can only assume that the white men I have met only see me as an opportunity to fulfill some "taboo mandingo fantasy". jc_online is pretty accurate. I too have worked as a prevention counselor here in NYC and a good way to reduce possible transmission is to make sure you protect yourself and protect the one you are with.
