Motivation

    what do you guys do, when your motivation wanes? when you feel like you're going through the motions, at the gym?

    Take a break. Usually, I am physically tired and the change is good mentally. After a week or two I'm back and enjoying it.

    Another trick I use is to change the music in my mp3---completely. Then I have something to look forward to listening.

    Routine is good but not constant routine. We were made for variety.

    Motivation wanes while at the gym? I wish that were my problem. This old man can't motivate himself to get to the gym -- in spite of health concerns, a large number of meds, and outgrowing my now limited wardrobe! :-(

    Depends on what's making you stale

    If you're not seeing the gains that you'd like
    Shake things up
    change the order or the exercises that you're doing
    hit the trails ... bike outside or run along the beach
    take a weekend refresher with a trainer
    Go to that hot new gym that just opened and ask for a week to try it out
    try the P90X tape that's out there
    .... take your pick

    but try to see it from a new angle

    The suggestions given already are good. Like they said, shake up your routine. I sometimes start using only cables for awhile; no free weights. The key is to do something.

    There is also something called overtraining. It's when you train too much or don't give your body enough rest. You might experience some loss in strength or even feel like you are in a funk. I have experienced it. Not fun.

    I cut back going to the gym and substituted activities that kept me active, but allowed my body to heal. I walked the neighborhood or to the store and that counted as my gym time. If I did hit the gym it was for some cardio, stretching, or even some light weight training, but i kept it to just 30 minutes.

    Depends on what my motivation was to begin with and whether it was based in desires beyond my reach. Sometimes the hardest thing for me to do is acknowledge when I set the bar too high for myself and then love myself enough to lower it.
