I just read someone say in their profile of what they are looking for say, " I am not looking for a pretty boy " ironically enough he also said " Looks are important "

I've been called " pretty " before and never really knew how to feel about this, is this a good or bad thing ? If you've been called " pretty boy " do you see this as a compliment or insult ? How do you respond to it ?

I assume this has to do with natural facial features seeing as straight people use this term to describe you regardless of sexual orientation

I believe the term 'pretty boy' is mostly reserved for those that primp a lot and may be a walking fashion statement or Guccii ad

Exactly! To me, it sounds like an insult.

I had this same question a while ago, because I get called "pretty boy" all the time. I guess it just depends on how you use it.

interesting, i want all the people who have been called this to comment to see if there is something " similar " about any of us so i can pinpoint what this is.

I get called a pretty boy, though, I don't find it as flattering as some may assume. Pretty boy to me means, you can't look masculine (which for me is hard enough to do with the facial features I have).

But I've learned to deal with what I was born with.

Ripped jeans and tribal jewelry are as affected and as pretty a look as bed head.

I'm still called pretty at fifty. It's such a trial.*

Hmm, well from what i've seen, the different types of ways, and does masculine mean anyone with a beard and big muscles ? Does it mean that " pretty boys " look like women lol ?

One of my friends called Kyle Gallner a " pretty boy " , but i dont think i look like him .... at all.

    ...what ?

Looking "casual," like you don't spend a lot of time on your hair or clothes, often takes longer than looking like you do - that's all.

As someone who gets a lot of variations of the term, I can say "Pretty Boy" has both positive and pejorative meanings.

If directed just at the way you look, it is probably viewed as positive by our society. A man's face that is "pretty enough to be on a woman", something like that. Think fashion model. It doesn't, when used in this fashion, make any implications on a lack of masculinity beyond the surface.

If directed to your grooming habits it means high maintenance, really implying that one "wants to be pretty" and tries hard. In this sense, the guy being called pretty boy could even be ugly. I would say this one is rather pejorative.

I used to get called that all the time. I think Mesmer is sorta right. It can be seen as backhanded compliment. Anyone who says they don't like pretty boys is probably the kind of person who says a lot of insulting things. At it's root, it means you're attractive.

I guess it is a compliment in a way but it sounds pretty weird. Almost condescending.

I think some of you are confusing saying that a guy is 'pretty' with say that a guy has 'pretty boy' looks.

OK so apparently there's more than one meaning to this, some flattering, and some insulting, it depends on the person

The insinuation of "pretty boy", at least to me, is an attack on one's masculinity. Essentially it says that you look good but you aren't "a man's man". In my experience (which is limited, granted) calling someone a pretty boy is a coping mechanism for jealous men.

Its 'cause you're hot and stems from jealousy on the part of those calling you that. Yes it's a compliment.

I usually reserve calling a guy "pretty boy" for when he's all scat nasty in a sling after being a public utility for a whole rugby team.

As in, "Look at the 'pretty boy' all scat nasty in a sling!"

It means that all people have types and some express it in douchetastic ways.

I could see where you could be called a 'pretty boy,' but I wouldn't necessarily think it's an insult. I've actually heard more straight boys being called a pretty boy than gay ones. Personally, I'd rather be called 'pretty boy' than 'twink.'

You look good, and what's more it seems like you like the way you look. All you need is someone who also likes the way you look. Chances are there are several million of them out there. Don't let the ones who don't find you to their taste distract you from that important truth. As for the one's who don't like 'pretty boys'...well, is that really the type of person who would satisfy you anyway?

Maybe there's nothing cryptic about it and they just think you're pretty. icon_biggrin.gif
