    I don't care that he has four wives as long as they are willing and are adults. I'm also glad that they believe that all people should marry who they want and kind of surprised by that. It's their lifestyle choice and they seem to respect everyone elses choices so good for them.

    True but personally I don't see polygamy as a bad thing morally. I think you should be allowed to have more than one spouse. It may never legally happen but still.

    John Stuart Mill, who formulated the Harm to Others principle that underlies modern minority rights observed in On Liberty that this principle would also permit polygamy, so it's not a surprise.

    What should surprise us is that many evangelicals advocate a softer line on divorce/remarriage and have probaly millions of divorcees in their congragations. If anything is going to 'destroy marriage' as they define it, that will.

    Well coming from a country whose president is a polygamist, i think this is not a bad thing. Just like homosexuality, this group of people are looked down upon without much knowledge. let not be ignorant and jugdemental. these are human too and it good that they are open minded, unlike some of us here.

    Many gays have open relationships. Or even pleural relationships. Many bis have a wife and a boyfriend too. This is why marriage equality should include poligmy.

    Hmmm.. up here that's what happened as well, and it was not all that sincere, as their support (Bountiful, in BC)was only in order to get legal rights for themselves.

    I've no idea what TLC Sister Wives is about but on marriage for polygamist relationships, my only issue would be one of fairness.

    Will all the spouses receive full social benefits as a married couple receive or does the family get just the benefits which might have gone to a couple, only now divided among however many spouses. Same issue with company insurance benefits, death taxes, etc.

    I agree. Are we seriously slippery-sloping polygamy into pedophilia?

    Where have I heard that kind of argumentation befo-

    I don't think he was equating pedophilia and polygamy. What was inferred was that the one-man-one-woman marriage proponents aren't going to give much creedence to polygamists' view points on gay marriage, so their support isn't very helpful - about as much help as would the support from pedophiles.

    P.S. My puppy is constantly trying to lick me in the mouth. I think he's a proponent of interspecies relationships.

    I don't care if people want to enter into a polygamist marriage. It doesn't affect me and is not any of my business. I'll even acknowledge that women are often in controlling and unhealthy relationships in these kind of scenarios, but I don't feel it is our place to deny everyone this type of relationship to protect those that might put themselves in an unhealthy situation.

    Multiply how ever many spouses by......

    A spouse receives one-half of the retired worker's full benefit unless the spouse begins collecting benefits before full retirement age. If the spouse begins collecting benefits before full retirement age, the amount of the spouse's benefit is reduced by a percentage based on the number of months before he/she reaches full retirement age....

    ...However, if a spouse is taking care of a child who is either under age 16 or disabled and receives Social Security benefits, a spouse will get full benefits, regardless of age.

    You're comparing apples and oranges. Multiple marriages is not in the same category as same-sex marriage. Besides, one is criminal and one is not. There's a big difference between something that is not authorized and something you can go to prison for.

    turbobilly said"A spouse" Not three or four.

    Right, but that's the problem. Each individual is "a spouse". So why couldn't each one collect on a claim?

    Even as is, more than one person can collect on the Social Security of another, such as in the case of divorce...

    http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/299/~/qualifying-for-divorced-spouse-benefits
    A person can receive benefits as a divorced spouse on a former spouse’s Social Security record if he or she:
    •Was married to the former spouse for at least 10 years;
    •Is at least age 62 years old;
    •Is unmarried; and
    •Is not entitled to a higher Social Security benefit on his or her own record.

    So now you could have one person working, paying into the system, but in a married poly situation you could have innumerable people collecting social benefits on that.

    And how do you fix that? Discriminate against some of the spouses? Discriminate against the group that you just gave more rights to so that you aren't discriminating against them?

    So polygamy is very different from marriage for a gay couple.

    Sorry to hear that. I'm just citing SS rules and how that could theoretically apply to this situation.

    I can relate somewhat because when seriously injured in a construction accident, worker's comp completely fucked me. I had been saving for years for a house and had just started shopping it. But I lost all that money. Took me years to recover.

    But even that the system might not always work doesn't mean you don't have to take that into account. And it's not just government benefits, but even at work, they would be at a huge advantage over single people for insurance purposes and sometimes managers pay not by merit but according to perceived needs. Again, this comes down to fairness. This isn't one on one vs one on one.
