New Mexico is another one of those states that has a really long way to go. They are mainly a republican state, and they have a lot antiquated ways of looking at life. The Land of the Enchanted is more like the Land of the Lost. It is mainly hispanic, and the hispanic culture has a long linage of bigotted, homophobic views on homosexuality, while many who voice those homophobic opinions are actually closeted.

One of the most empowering feelings in my whole life came after I learned to fight and defend myself against a few bullies, back when I was a kid. I'd tried everything else - avoidance, befriending them, you name it, but they saw me as a week, pale, skinny target. Learning how to throw a punch and fight (even a little bit) helped me so much. I was never bothered again. I sometimes wish I could help every kid put a stop to his troubles with bullies. The feeling you get when they stop bothering you is one of calm and peace. Too bad you have to stand up for yourself to earn that feeling. Too bad a bully won't just leave you in peace because you're a nice guy.

Wow... I guess if you're completely ignorant on a subject, just make shit up...

New Mexico has a Democratic majority Legislature, an all Democratic congressional delegation and Obama won the state by around 60% in the last election. VERY Republican.

I am interested, however, in hearing more "insight" on NM hispanic culture from a non-hispanic guy in CO.icon_rolleyes.gif

This could just as easily have happened in Massachusetts or California.

Stop making stupid, unfounded statements about an entire state and culture.

    Oh joy. Another one.

I swear to God. How many kids have to kill themselves and others before these teachers and school officials realize that something is wrong? Of corse they won't - they're too busy staring at the clock waitin for 3 o clock to ro around so they can race to the parking lot...

Teaching is not an easy job. Please don't paint all educators/staff with the same brush. I've taught before in a pluralistic setting; creating a positive and tolerant environment for my students was pretty much my top priority.

It's quite alright. I understand it makes sense, as a gut reaction, to blame the environment. I'm sure that there must have been tragic oversights, considering the outcome.
