Good riddance! She was the ugliest old crone in DC and she never let her position as a journalist get in the way of using her position to further her own political agenda.

Aristoshark saidI liked her, mostly, but that bit of anti-Semitism that ended her career was deeply unpleasant. She issued an apology but I think that was under duress. I suspect she really did hate Jews.

I enjoyed reading her articles - articulate, intelligent, often stimulating. The anti-semitic comments were unfortunate, but one never read her without having to think a bit - all to rare.

"Ugly?" And that has anything to do with her writing?

JudahTheMaccabee saidA feminist pioneer and progressive trailblazer, but above all, a TRUE journalist.

Really, calling a Lebanese-American "anti-Semitic" is logically on a par with calling a Mexican or a Cuban "anti-Hispanic".

Her remarks, subsequently apologized for, were unfortunate. But uglier by far were the hysterical accusations that she had voiced a desire for Jews to return to the death camps - a complete twisting of her remarks in an unsuccessful attempt to irretrievably sully her name.
But then, what have we come to expect from the moral blackmail crowd? Who by now are well accustomed to the principled objections of the left and the progressive community?

    Thanks for the giggle.

And OF COURSE the lefty resorts to personal attacks .... no surprise there.

JudahTheMaccabee saidIn fact, the first personal attack (as is to be expected) came from the "pro-Israel" crowd.
That said, I'm not actually sure you attained the lynching you'd been hoping for when you dragged this 92-year-old woman from the morgue.

What has she said or done to provoke that?

JudahTheMaccabee saidThomas's remarks are well known, and were apologized for. Whereas most view them as atypical of a long and distinguished career, a few idiots continue to prove that there is no occasion too solemn for their bile.

The media, for once, when confronted with the legacy of REAL journalists (Assange, Snowden etc) seems in a pretty generous mood today. Not that you'd have expected such a reaction three years ago.

Now, remember what you just said ... for the next time a well known conservative passes. No bile from you ... got it?

JudahTheMaccabee saidLets's agree on the definitions so I might answer the question:

"Conservative" = exponent of radical adventurism overseas and depletion of the national treasury at home, a la the Bush doctrine.

"Bile" = various degrees of opposition to such policies, often voiced tentatively.

    That's it. Gym time.

She did not hate jews. She just told it like it was. The situation in Israel is a tragedy which we allowed and encouraged for years. Only now its going to get more fair as power gets shifted.
Helen Thomas was a great reporter, we do not have journalists with her integrity anymore.

Oh really? Telling it like it is means suggesting that the native-born Israelis "go back to Germany or Poland or wherever they came from"?

I see the anti-Semites are coming out of the woodwork. Funny how that's gotten respectable again---under some damp rocks, anyway.

    Yes indeed!

JudahTheMaccabee saidOkay, so by way of example:

"Conservative" position on Vietnam War: 'Smoke the gooks out of their holes, burn their rice paddies and cull the pinko rot in its cradle.'

"Respectable Liberal" position on Vietnam War: 'Too much American effort to bring civilization to the gooks. Better we leave while we can, stop bombing them for their own good, and spend our money on good white people.'

Eesh, what might one make of this:

"Non-respectable Liberal" position on Vietnam War: 'Psychopaths stop the mass murder and colonial savagery in a faraway land. Impeach criminal president, send his goons (Kissinger et al) to the slammer, and pay reparations till they tell you to stop.'

I'm guessing that's the "bile", right?

    yep

    Impeach LBJ or JFK?

JudahTheMaccabee saidPlenty to impeach both of 'em on, had the political will existed while they were alive. Their successor Nixon would've been impeached if he'd had the bottle to face the music instead of resigning so he could be "pardoned" by by his VP. Reagan too would've gotten the treatment over Iran-Contra, had his presidency not been at an end by the time the full details came out. And Clinton actually was impeached. In fact, can you name a single US President that wouldn't be hanged under the principles of Nuremberg?

If 500,000 + Israeli citizens themselves choose to live outside Israel, not for the betterment of their own country but to prevent the emergence of another, having no desire to live within their country's borders, where do you suggest they go?
(I believe Helen Thomas suggested America alongside Germany and Poland)

Oh sure, impeach all of them.

Helen Thomas was an anti-Semitic bitch who finally got exposed and then was fired. She's disgusting and I hope she's enjoying the fire.

Thomas said in an October 2011 radio interview with Scott Spears of WMRN that she realized soon after making the anti-Semitic comments that she would be fired, stating, "I hit the third rail. You cannot criticize Israel in this country and survive." She added that she issued an apology because people were upset, but that ultimately, she still "had the same feelings about Israel's aggression and brutality."

Thanks for the "apology" Ms. Thomas. Nice to know you were truly sincere about it. You weren't sorry at all about making the comments, you were sorry you got caught. You were a muckraker for much of your life.

    Karma: Ain't it a bitch?

In March 2005, she confronted Bush with the proposition that "your decision to invade Iraq has caused the deaths of thousands of Americans and Iraqis" and every justification for the attack proved false. "Why did you really want to go to war?" she demanded.

When Bush began explaining his rationale, she interjected: "They didn't do anything to you, or to our country."

"Excuse me for a second," Bush replied. "They did. The Taliban provided safe haven for al-Qaida. That's where al-Qaida trained."

"I'm talking about Iraq," she said.

JudahTheMaccabee saidRIP Helen Thomas, a true pioneer in so many ways, who really understood the purpose of journalism

    -- Glenn Greenwald

RIP Helen Thomas, 92, the only White House reporter who asked 'why do terrorists want to kill us?'

    -- Michael Moore

There will never be another Helen Thomas. She shattered forever one anti-woman journalistic barrier after another in the Washington press corps and rose to the top of her profession’s organizations.

    -- Ralph Nader

Tell me, why is it that YET AGAIN Israel's small gaggle of "supporters" are completely out of step with liberal opinion?
Hell, even the President and the White House Press Association:

Helen was a true pioneer, opening doors and breaking down barriers for generations of women in journalism. She covered every White House since President Kennedy’s, and during that time she never failed to keep presidents – myself included – on their toes. What made Helen the “Dean of the White House Press Corps” was not just the length of her tenure, but her fierce belief that our democracy works best when we ask tough questions and hold our leaders to account. Our thoughts are with Helen’s family, her friends, and the colleagues who respected her so deeply.

    -- Barack Obama

Very funny that you quote Michael Moore and Ralph Nader. That's supposed to convince us of what?

Then again, Helen Thomas did she thought was right and may she RIP. I have no axe to grind.

Aristoshark saidJudah: You can't possibly be this stupid. There are all kinds of ways and reasons to criticize Israel without suggesting that its inhabitants "go back" to a place where their relatives were recently butchered. I don't support Israel's policies myself, and I'm Jewish. I think the settlements are criminal, the wall is deliberately provocative, and the current regime is insane. But I am not deceived that there are many people---apparently including you---who believe that no rhetoric is too disgusting to use and that Israeli-born citizens have no right to be there. This makes you an anti-Semite. Own it. It's yours.

Sorta trendy these days, wouldn't you say?
