Fred Grimm: Boycott aimed at wrong Florida

Efforts to boycott Florida over the Zimmerman verdict produced this editorial against that approach from (not surprisingly) the Miami Herald. The reasoning is that a boycott hurts Florida most in the tourist areas, which are more liberal, and not the actual red-neck parts of the State the boycotters want to hurt:

"The notion that a national tourism boycott might hurt Miami-Dade or Broward or Palm Beach counties — regarded by the good ol’ boys who run this state as a cesspool of foreigners, gays, Jews, Yankees, strange accents, tiny bikinis and liberal inclinations — will only bring joy to their creepy cracker hearts. Those folks abandoned South Florida, most of them, a generation ago. Folded up their Confederate flags, oiled their assault weapons, renewed their NRA membership and skedaddled."

At the same time, I have to counter that if Florida is hurt financially ANYWHERE to any great extent then the voters in those areas will mobilize to out-vote the "good ol' boys" who currently "run this State" as the editorial claims. It might be just the motivation they need to get out and vote, even if they aren't the problem. And prompt tourism-related businesses to donate their money to Democratic candidates and not Republicans, to recover their lost revenues.

Who cares? It's Florida for gods sake. Who in their right mind would even want to visit? Unless you have a grandma named Shirley, then only because you might get something in her will.
It's right up there with Texas for attracting backwoods yokels and idiots. We should not boycott Florida, we should cut it free and let some other country claim it.
