I've heard this phrase numerous times in my life, and I still find it an ambiguous statement to describe, has anyone ever said that you have tried too hard with them? Or have any people in your life tried too hard in your own opinion?

I believe the phrase can have various meanings:
    You are over thinking it
    You are acting too needy
It's really not worth the trouble
No matter how much you want it, it is not going to happen

It sort of depends on the situation
Why exactly were you told this?

I have heard it used, but not just on me, I was told that by a former high school mate after I told him I was gay, and he said it seemed that it seemed that I was trying too hard to be someone im not.

Didn't you just say in another thread that at some point you had tried to force yourself to be str8? And wasn't that in a thread about forcing yourself to be a top? And now a thread on trying too hard?

Do you see the pattern here?

So you're saying I shouldn't try to be a top if that's not in my nature, and I shouldn't dictate my nature to make others happy?

you should be a psychotherapist hehe

EDIT: But i would like to try and actually be able to top, i want to know what the experience feels like, so the parallel here isn't entirely justified.

Never been in the relationship scene (still in the closet), but I know the phrase well.

It happens, usually on the subconscious level. You don't even realize sometimes that you go too far. Or that it can leave others hurt or put-off from it.
