The couple had flown to Maryland in an air ambulance, was married in the plane on the airport runway, and then flew back to Ohio. They wanted their marriage to be recognized in Ohio, because the cemetery where they intended to be buried refused to allow non-spouses to share a cemetery plot (Per NPR today) and the cemetery was not going to recognize the Maryland same-sex marriage. Haven't seen a weblink, but NPR broadcast part of the marriage ceremony - and you could tell the guy was dying. Quite moving.

The couple apparently was suing the state to force it to list their married status on the dying man's death certificate. A federal judge today ordered state officials to comply, because the couple was validly married in Maryland.

Of course, the State of Ohio intends to appeal.
