    I never wore pads. A good buddy hit a tree at slow speed. This was on a non-technical connector trail between technical, single-track. He crushed 5 vertebrae in his cervical spine, was paralyzed for several weeks, and miraculously recovered. The night before high-risk surgery to decompress his spinal cord the neurosurgeon saw the slightest change in my buddy's neuro functions and decided to hold off on the surgery. You just never know.

    Wow, that sounds awful and lucky at the same time!

    Quick-mend is no problem...it was just a hard shoulder bump (leaned in too far between two trees after railing a berm). But it didn't hurt near as bad (nor do near as much damage) as the sidewalk I hit last night after clipping my handlebar on a road sign. icon_lol.gif
