Getting even with telemarketers

Even though I'm on do not call lists, it doesn't stop them. Some local outfits, especially contractors are using cell phones. I'd like to find a service to post a number, even pay maybe 1 cent per completed call and send say 50 calls to the offending number with a message like: This is your 21st reminder not to call numbers on the do not call list. I couldn't find anything through a quick google search.

It doesn't happen to me very often. I just say "no thank you" and hang up.

If you get a VOIP service it may (should?) come with a forwarding service where you tell it to forward an incoming call from a certain number to some other number. You can have it forward as many different numbers as you want. Every time a new telemarketer calls I look at my call history and set up a forward for them to 909-390-0003, an echo thing. So they only get through once. I have http://voipo.com for my home phone.

The Do Not Call list was pointless. Telemarketers get around it by off-shoring to call centers in Canada, Ireland, and Philippines.

The first guy to offer phone service where the caller is billed 5.99$ a minute direct to the receiver unless the receiver presses * during the call, is going to be the worlds first trillionaire.

"This customer charges 5.99$/minute to receive calls not on his call list. continue y/n ?"

That alone would end ALL do not call list problems.
He would have every phone account within the first week.

I'm running without a landline these days and there's an Android app to mostly stop this. It's called Mr. Number and allows you to block 800, 888, 877, 866, unknown numbers, etc., and either send them directly to VM or have it drop the call and hang up. It allows you to see if a regular incoming number with a non 800 type area code has spam reports before you answer. It's a free app and gets about 95% of the nuisance calls.

That's great to know. Does anyone know if there is there an equivalent iphone app?

I also use a landline and without the similar feature on my Digitone Call Blocker my days off at home would be disrupted by it constantly ringing. The Digitone stores caller numbers which I can then google and block. To give you an idea, below is my Digitone call block list with (obvious) charities, exempt from the Do Not Call lists, identified for you in red. The problem with picking the phone up on a day off is that it's often a robo-call trying to identify a working number; once your number is identified as working it is sold to various charities and telemarketing companies, and the calls increase exponentially.

I recognize a couple of those spam numbers you're getting.

I've mentioned several times on RJ that I moved back to Ohio to take care of elderly parents. Before my dad passed a few months ago, he had gotten pretty severe dementia over the last couple of years. He would talk to these elder scammers (the Nigerian 419 scammers calling from Jamaica) and telemarketers and the calls increased exponentially. I think 90-95% of the calls that come into the parents landline are spam/scam. I wish there was something that work on Wow cable to do the same as Mr Number.

I would think that there would be an equivalent to Mr Number for iPhone.

I advertise my commercial real estate business the usual ways through social media, Google Maps, etc., plus I'm licensed in multiple states so it makes my situation much worse. For example, I never knew that there are at least 5,000 social media gurus all promising to get me on the first page of Google. I would get absolutely nothing done if I didn't have a way to block those calls, but obviously, I really really want those calls that are real people. So it's real tough for me to block the bullshit calls and still let folks through who I do want to talk to.

Aristoshark saidMy mom has a great method for stopping them.

Instead of being rude to them, she acts all excited and says "Wow, let me get my purse!" and then puts the phone down for like an hour.

They wait and they wait and they wait....and never call again.

That's something I've also tried .... keep them on the phone as long as possible.

Eidt: Oops not the purse line, btw. Although, maybe that's not a bad idea

Good tip about answering and making them wait, but by doing so wouldn't you still be identifying your number as working and therefore sellable? I don't even want to give anyone a chance of making a profit on my number. I considered giving up my landline but:

    1) Then wouldn't I get deluged on my iphone? I use my cell largely for outgoing calls and never give it out to anybody except relatives and close friends and business associates. Those forms that ask for all your numbers? I tell them I don't have one. I've never gotten a spam call or text on my cell.

    2) Having gone through a few hurricanes, I not only keep a working landline but an antique, hardwired phone that will work when cordless battery landlines die and cell phones don't work given atmospheric interference. After Hurricane Sandy I was the only person on the block for days with a working phone; people with cell phones who didn't have the option of driving several miles for service and burning gas they'd need for their generators - assuming the roads were passable - were stuck. And I'm the last person the neighbors would mistake for a doomsday prepper. (Not that I have a safe room but I converted my fireplace to gas so it would heat the house in the event of a power failure, which there was for over a week, so I didn't over rely on my generator. I just threw the mattress in front of the fire in the wood paneled den and it was like sleeping in an atmospheric lodge while the neighbors without generators had to stay up all night and feed logs to their fires - if they had fireplaces.)

I do something similar and put the phone down, but they still keep calling. If everyone did this it would make telemarketing unprofitable.

What I want is some sort of gizmo connected to my phone. A telemarketer calls and I say, for example, "Oh, can you hold on, someone's at the door" and then I press a button on the gizmo and it plays a scene with audio that sounds like it's happening in the distance; me opening the door and some crazy axe murderer hacking me to bits. With lots of juicy sound effects. The gizmo randomly picks from various scenes that are guaranteed to severely traumatize them.

Or handle a telemarketer like this guy, who answers like a detective and makes the caller think he's called into a crime scene and by doing so might be implicated! So hilarious the recording was played on the radio and went viral:

My favourite (and yes I've done this).

    *Doug picks up ringing phone*

    "Hello?"

Telemarketer, " Hello! I'm calling you about your credit score blah blah blah blah (endlessly then ending with-)if you give us your telephone number/postal code we can confirm blah blah blah."

Me: "Excuse me, did you just order a pizza with anchovies, double cheese, artichoke hearts and rising crust?"

    Telemarketer, "Er, no, I-"

Me, in happy warm tone: I'm sorry then, you must have called the wrong number. Sorry about that. "

    *hangs up*

    They never call back.

(PS I took this idea from a Calvin and Hobbes strip and damn, it worked!)

I rarely get them, but when they call, I usually keep them on the line, unsure and asking all sorts of irrelevant questions, but never making a decision. They usually hang up and never ring back.

Lumpynose saidWhat I want is some sort of gizmo connected to my phone.

Dude we can invent it !!!icon_twisted.gif

Heh, yeah, it shouldn't be hard. The hard part as I see it is getting the actors and actresses to do the scenarios. Feel free to run with it.

That would make for a most interesting "What Would You Do?" with John Quinones. You know, seeing how on hidden camera the telemarketer would react to a crime-in-progress.

Would he stick to his script and continue? Would he hang up and move on to the next call? Or would he call 911?

You can do that with a soundboard.

I made them to do prank calls with Skype (since my # didn't show up) and posted them on YouTube. But I've seen people use their cell phones and landlines and still do a soundboard prank call effectively.

I keep getting calls for some woman who had my mobile phone number before me. Since the day I got it, I get these calls from credit agencies (I think!) asking for her. After a while i started answering
"Last I saw, she was still under the rosebushes in the front garden."
    or

"oh, hadn't you heard? She was one of Robert Picton's victims."
