I watch little television, but there's a local public station that is going through changes, and suddenly they are showing european detective series from the Mhz network several nights a week. The great one so far is Spiral, (Engrenages original title). It is gripping, gritty, realistic, and well produced with several crime plots going on at once, and shows the french justice system to be almost totally corrupt. They started it here with season 2, so I will definitely be getting season 1 on Netflix. Catch it if you can.

Spiral is great! It's been on in the UK for a few years now - I think we're up to season 4. Other foreign drama series to try and catch are The Killing (Danish version) much better than the US remake, the Bridge (Danish/Swedish) and Borgen (Danish again). The first two are crime series the second one is political - all are fantastic.

Now showing Season 3 on Mhz Network. Better than the first season. It's far more believable than any american police show I have seen. The heroine [sic] Lieutenant is a mess - alcoholic, bitchy, on the verge of a nervous breakdown, out of control most of the time, sleeping in her car,and always breaking the rules. No male viewer could possibly have a sympathetic view of her. The police always rough up any suspects they detain. The investigating judge, and his efficient matronly assistant are the only honest people in the judicial system. His superior is doing his best to quash investigations that may uncover corruption in a suburban government because of connections to national politicians, and fires a prosecutor for his refusing to spy on judges. A great scene where a cop gives coke to a helpful transvestite prostitute who has identified a murder suspect. The murders being investigated are especially gruesome sex killings. The viewer is spared nothing - gets to see eastern european sex traffickers beating up slave prostitutes.

It is really gripping, and was a big hit on French TV when it debuted. We just don't get such hard-hitting shows on American TV - even on HBO or Showtime.

I have already watched The Killing(Danish version), Bridge, and Borgen. I am going to give Spiral a try. They do make good detective series in Scandinavian countries.
