I was about to tell this guy I'm talking to that he is very photogenic, but a light bulb burst in my head. Is it really a compliment? I'd feel a bit insulted if someone implied I looked good in photos, but not in RL. How do you guys see it?

it is one of those subtle insults ... the moment they give it you go icon_biggrin.gif ... and then a moment passes and you start to think and you go icon_eek.gif

That's what I was thinking. And he has modeled as well, hence the photos. So I bet he'd be extra sensitive to it.

There are those that are both photogenic & hot as hell in person---Henry Cavill, Chris Evans, Channing Tatum, Sagi Kalev..... icon_smile.gif .....

If someone doesn't have anything better to do in their life than consider getting told they are photogenic as insulting that is not someone I want to associate with in the first place.

Well it might be an automatic thought for some, an instinctive feeling.

Telling someone they're photogenic is like telling them they are a good singer.

I'm not sure how telling someone he's photogenic could be taken as anything other than a compliment. Have I missed something?

Right?! icon_smile.gif Usually if they're photogenic, the camera loves them, they can't take a bad picture & they have great bone structure icon_smile.gif .....

Strangely enough, I'd like to be told that I look photogenic icon_rolleyes.gif...but everyone who knows me or has seen me IRL think I'm so tragic looking in pictures.

I've been told pictures don't do me justice. My photographer should be insulted.

I think you may be reading too much into this. It is a compliment. Saying that you look nice in pictures doesn't imply that you don't look nice in person.

If someone was trying to insult you, they would probably be more direct about it. Otherwise what would be the point? icon_wink.gif

Definitely a compliment. I mean do you really want people to say "you look damn awful in pictures"?

Not everyone takes good pictures, so it really is a compliment.

Oh, I used to (sort of) get that all the time - usually a sub-conscious insult. One time I got conned into getting studio (glamour shots) photos taken for some event. Thereafter never used the pics for anything... except I sent one in to be put on my VISA card. Check-out clerks would try to match it up to my regular face all the time and say something like, "Wow, that's a really good picture of you." Quite a few of them would then realize that it was an insult and turn red.
