Self defense from gay bashers?

I've been thinking about this since yesterday and thought it could be a good discussion topic. I was reading a story about a gay man who stabbed a 17 year old after said teenager and a group of his friends harassed and physically attacked him. The judged threw out the degree of manslaughter but I couldn't find what the ruling was. Anyways, it got me thinking because well, whenever I go out into town, I do carry a knife in my bag. I mostly do that when I go out at night. Luckily, I never have had such harassment other then name calling and pssh, I don't care about that. So yeah, luckily, I haven' had a physical threat yet.

But does it seem a bit strange that I carry such an object on me. I keep it in my bag and like I said, I usually only take it with me whenever I go out at night. I'm always by myself when I'm out and about and I'm just extra cautious of my surroundings. And I know a lot of others have the same mindset. Is this kind of mindset appropriate though..?

I completely agree with the OP that we all should be able to protect ourselves from attack, and/or be able to fight back, in some way. One problem I see is that there are almost always more than one of the cowardly sons a bitches. Also, if you stab one of them, and he dies, how do you prove that you were defending yourself, and not using "excessive force ?"

Yeah, I've thought of that... If the attacker died.. I honestly don't know. I would say I would try to explain to the jury in court but if they were full of gay hating individuals, that's a losing battle. I don't know... You got me there...

If the OP is being harrassed by people when he is out alone at night, then he should have some way to protect himself. Androgynous men are targeted for violence, and sadly bystanders don't often come to their rescue. I don't see how mocking him is helping.

A gun, gat, baseball bank, shank, blade, knife, or my fists

You have a right to defend yourself. Period point blank

I'd say get yourself some pepper spray instead of a knife. Handling a knife can be all sorts of stupid with the situations you get yourself into.

Self defense is a natural right and every gay man (and everybody in general) should know how to defend himself with whatever weapon he sees fit. But be cautious in its application. If you use deadly force or even injure someone when your life or limb wasn't in serious jeopardy, expect to be raped by the courts.

It doesn't hurt to be prepared.

If I were in a gladiator fight, I would combat my opponents using bow and arrows, sword, and throwing spears. I would be proficient at hand-to-hand combat and all combat experience. I would do many things...

Of course, I don't know why people just don't bring pepper spray. icon_lol.gif

Uhm, though you're also far more likely to be killed if you pull a weapon on your attackers.

If someone's just hassling you for money, give em the money. If things get violent, then reciprocate.

Don't use violence unless someone else does first - you're far more likely to be killed then.

I think everyone can agree on having the right to self defence. There's nothing wrong with that kind of mindset.

But the real question to ask, OP (and in essence for all of us), is do you really know how to defend yourself? You may carry a knife, but do you know how to use one? It's not so simple "stick them with the pointy end". Have you considered that in you carrying a knife, an unarmed assailant may in the end use your own knife to gut you?

Have you also considered the consequence of being armed? What if you pulled that knife our and your assailant pulls out a gun?

If you really want to protect yourself, I'd suggest getting in the "safety" frame of mind. Be cautious and aware of your surroundings and the things and people in it. Plan from there how you can achieve safety, ie which route is the quickest you can flee the scene and find help, or see that rubbish bin in the corner and know that you can use it to smash an assailant's face/body.

Lastly, being on your own when out and about, especially at late hours, if you're in a questionable area, is probably not the safest thing to do.

    Stay safe.
