I find myself bothered by the identification system we seem to have. For example, guys calling themselves jocks. I don't think going to the gym makes you a jock or an athlete for that matter. Another one is Nerd, what makes you a nerd and why is that a thing? Is that what you want people to know you as or...I'm just confused by it all. Finally, what do you guys think officially makes someone "gay." There are tons of guys who date women and sleep with men but don't identify as gay.

Proud nerd here! To me it means I'm into science and computers. Also that I can be a little socially awkward. If you find the XKCD or SMBC web-comics funny then you're probably a nerd.

That's more or less along the lines of what I was thinking. Generally, people seem to think that because they watch cartoons or play video games it makes them a nerd. I don't think someone who truly is a nerd would go out of their way to make that claim. It seems like they toss the word in their profile because it makes them seem different or to add to their appeal and I just don't get it.

Bulldandruff to the system. It's pathetic that people want to pretend they're still in high school. Wasn't this site meant for ADULTS?

"A nerd (adjective: nerdy) is a person, typically described as being overly intellectual, obsessive, or socially impaired. They may spend inordinate amounts of time on unpopular, obscure, or non-mainstream activities, which are generally either highly technical or relating to topics of fiction or fantasy, to the exclusion of more mainstream activities.[1][2][3] Additionally, many nerds are described as being shy, quirky, and unattractive,[4] and may have difficulty participating in, or even following, sports. "Nerd" is a derogatory, stereotypical term, but as with other pejoratives, it has been reclaimed and redefined by some as a term of pride and group identity."

Identification is a way of labeling or categorizing oneself & others into an easy black or white box that never really encompasses the multi-facetedness & multiple shades of gray in every single individual...,,

OK, go to the store and get some things for me. No need for identifying labels, you should simply know what you're supposed to buy.

While I was in high school, we never used the word "jock". There was never even a substitute word for it. You just knew who the athletes were, and they existed in all social circles (some more than others). When I went to college, I was actually surprised to hear so many people describe any of their high school classmates as "jocks". I figured it was just an American saying, or just something you see on TV.

So to this day, I don't personally use the word jock, and I'm a bit blind to whoever uses the word to describe themselves. It's an invisible quality from my perspective.

As for nerd, I see it as something that people have used to describe being a fanatic of anything beyond the norm. That's why some people who call themselves nerds aren't just into science and computers. If there's a certain fictional series (TV, film, comic, novel, video game, etc.) that you spend a lot of time watching, discussing or thinking about, you could consider yourself to be a "nerd" for that particular thing. Or it could be a hobby or interest that you are more involved in than other people, to the point where you know a lot of the history and facts about.

I see what you're saying, it could very well be an American saying..wouldn't be the first time. Also a lot of people describe their body type as athletic. I describe mine that way because I'm a college athlete. I think we should learn to just "be." If you work out, just say you work out, why do you have to be a jock?

Being scared, ashamed, and confused by labels is more about you being scared/ashamed/confused than labels being inherently bad.

So let me get this straight (this phrase always looks like a pun on this website): your biggest issue is that you don't understand the labels. Am I right?

Then the fix is easy. Google it.

    Next, please!
