I heard someone pontificate recently that the best way to deal with Russia at Sochi Olympics, is to have gay athletes actually attend the games, and pull a Jesse Owens moment and win medals. In other words, go into the heart of the the beast, and show on the world stage just how wrong they are.

The medal winners should make out with each other on their little 1-2-3 platforms. icon_lol.gif

Someone should do a string operation on Putin with some hot guy seducing him. I am sure Putin is a closet homophobe and that's why he got divorced recently.

Not the case. But the alliance with the Russian Orthodox Church and perceived need to find a scapegoat acceptable to many countries.....it was either the Jews or the gays...ultimately, the gays. He has Jewish business friends.

I think that they should deal with it in a mature manner. The whole making out thing would be immature. Use your intellect guys, not your impulses.

I would say keeping the Russian government at arms length, but Putin seems to be doing a good job of isolationism already. We should continue expanding NATO, if for no other reason than to show Putin he can't have his own way.

Winning medals will not make any gays or lesbians visitors feel safe in Russia. All members of the LGBT community should avoid the games for their own safety considering the amount of organized anti groups in Russia.

Of course safety of the athletes is a reasonable question and solid efforts are neccessary to insure that Russian statements that Gay athletes will be immune to anti-LGBT laws.

That said I for one recently "pontificated" that this is a chance for a Jesse Owens Moment in the previous thread http://www.realjock.com/gayforums/3257981/?forumpage=1. See below:

This is the opportunity for the very few out gay Olympic athletes to have a Jesse Owens moment. Any open gay athlete standing on the platform with a medal around their neck is a big FU to Putin.

And for the sponsors they should be encouraged to stay in the Olympics and put out pro-equal rights statements in their ads rather being encouraged to pull their support.

    Just a thought.

Did whoever it was have any good ideas about how to dial in a gold on demand?

Boycott all Russian-made goods. Boycott travel to Russia. Russians, right wingers that is, may not come to love gays but they will be more circumspect in their treatment of us if it is costing them rubles.
This worked against South Africa back in the '80's, and ended apartheid and the white supremacist government.

Move the games to Vancouver. Russia needs to pay a price for this act of terror against human rights.

Apparently one method is to boycott alcohol which isn't even made in Russia anymore and is produced by a company that promotes and donates to gay causes around the globe.

    Why?

    Because Russian vodka.

So, in other words, if we do exactly what they want, which is to patronize them at the Olympics, we'll teach them a lesson. Yeah, right.icon_rolleyes.gif

Sorry about that, did not mean to steal your thunder. I heard the idea on of all places, a Canadian conservative news channel.

I honestly can only hope that the IOC actually grow some balls to do this.
