Bloomberg has already said as much. I agree with the judge's opinion that this was racial profiling. There are other Constitutional ways to police the streets and prevent crime.

Bloomberg's argument that this NYPD policy reduced crime is a fail. Lots of other repressive & Draconian measures would reduce crime, too, like blocking off whole streets and frisking everyone without cause.

This is the United States, not a Fascist police state. Not yet, anyway, though at times we're getting close, when politicians like Bloomberg believe the ends justify the means, in defiance of Constitutional protections.

Is this judge who ruled it unconstitutional related to this judge?

I am surprised this went on for so long. There are rules bound to Terry stops/frisks, and there's a reason for that. What saddens me more than seeing police abuse the law is how many Americans don't even know their rights when it comes to defending against police officers.

Not to say it would help people in NYC, but people really should be required to take a search/seizure course, hell a general US law course would even better.

I could be wrong but I thought I saw a stat that more black and latino men were frisked by the NYPD than the number of Black and Latino men living in NYC. I don't have a problem with officers reducing crime and stopping suspicuous activity. I have a problem with the inconsistent subjectivity of what "suspicious" means and looks like and how punishment is then applied.

We in NYC seem to be more than willing to give up a lot of our rights. We have the salt ban, the trans fat ban, the (now reversed) soda ban. It's really annoying how the City Council wants to control so many aspects of our lives.

Without any help from said law, lol. Violent crime in NYC has been on the decline since way before Stop and Frisk.

    yep, thank goodness for that

Stop and Frisk has been the practice in NYC for decades, but it wasn't until Mayor Bloomberg's administration that it got out of hand. Mayor Bloomberg is no Rudy Giuliani. Rudy used a heavy broom in the city, but he didn't violate people's civil rights through his aggressive orders to the PD and Transportation PD. Mayor Bloomberg has gone the other way. The argument of desperate times and desperate measures has to have a limit, and Mayor Bloomberg has far exceeded it. Good for the Courts in ordering this practice unconstitutional.

When I used my credit card today I was asked by the clerk for my id. This is kinda rare. Maybe she thought I looked suspicious.

I thanked her for checking because it ultimately helped protect my credit security.

Some people see Stop&Frisk this way. It's a little inconvenience that keeps everyone safe.

But I've got friends who get this little inconvenience all the time and for only one reason; they are black.

If the police want to do Stop&Frisk, do it to everyone. Just like airport security. This BS policy will soon end.

That's true. Giuliani was an excellent mayor.

sorry, but over 90% of the violent crime suspects in NYC are hispanic and black, it's a fact. So when this is fixed, let me know.

there is no flaw in my argument. I take the subway and rollerblade to Yankee Stadium from Manhatten and I've seen a lot of shit.

When 10 kids get shot in Chicago over the weekend (all black) or when 3 15 year old black kids beat the shit out of a 13 year old white kid, nobody gives a shit (including Rev Al and Jesse Jackson).

Sorry, but the black and latino community needs to own up to this shit and fix it. 73% of black kids born out of wedlock. REALLY? WTF

We might as well empty the prisons and jails across America, since the majority of inmates are some minority and that automatically means they're only there because of systemic racism. icon_rolleyes.gif

Does anyone know how many illegal guns have been taken off the streets by the stop and frisk procedure in NYC? Or how many wanted criminals have been arrested because of it? Or how much illegal drugs have been taken off the streets?

If you don't behave suspiciously you probably won't get stopped and frisked. Maybe, just maybe, those who are outraged could direct their outrage at the perpetrators of crime in their own neighborhoods, and towards people who live irresponsibly. This used to be commonplace years ago.

As Victor Hugo said, where there is darkness, there is crime. Nobody can take white men who concern troll about black criminality seriously while they avoid taking responsibility for the darkness they and their ancestors created.

From the Inquisition, to the Crusades, to the slave trade, to Indian genocide, to the Civil War, to World War I, to World II, to the illegal War in Iraq, to mass shooters, to serial killers, to the Great Depression, to the Great Recession, white men have set records for greed, death, destruction, ruthlessness, viciousness, rape, pillage and destroying lives and livelihoods throughout world history.

Conservative white males continue to push guns, demonize public education, and hoard wealth -- opposing the efforts of progressive whites to remove the poverty, ignorance, and hopelessless that leads to crime.

Sorry, but racist, greedy, bloodthirsty, selfish white males need to stop blaming the victims of the evil, despair, and darkness they have created. Dick Cheney, George Bush, Donald Rumsfeld, and Wall Street crony corporatist criminals go unarrested for behaviors that have directly or indirectly killed hundreds of thousands of people and we're supposed to allow them to shred the Constitution with stop and frisk by fooling us into thinking we should really be scared of some poor, powerless black kid in Chicago because he has a hoodie and is eating Skittles? Yeah, right -- nice try though!

That's it, blame someone else for your own piss-poor behavior. Each individual is responsible for their own actions. I came from a poor background, and decided not to perpetuate it like my brothers did. Instead, I decided I would have a good job and a nice home and hopefully a comfortable retirement. No kids, no lousy jobs, no relationships with irresponsible people, no debt, no trouble with the law. These things plus effort at work usually result in a better standard of living. This used to be known as "common sense".

A kid eating skittles may not be so innocent after all. Below is from a column by Dennis Prager written a few weeks ago:

    The Media:

—Fabricated the "iced tea" part of the "iced tea and Skittles" narrative. This is important because the drink he was actually carrying was AriZona Watermelon Fruit Juice Cocktail. According to a popular recipe, that is the favored drink to combine with Skittles and prescription, or Robitussin, cough syrup to produce a potion for getting high known as "lean" and "purple drank" (and known among some as "the poor man's PCP"). On his Facebook page, Trayvon Martin had discussed making lean.

Does anyone know anything about this??

Typical conservative hypocrisy. The criminality of some black people is not "responsible" to "each individual" but indicative of "problems with the black community" that require any and all black people to be profiled. That's okay.

However, any mention of the treachery of white extremists and suddenly it's about individuals.

Republicans might one day again be able to win an election when they learn to sweep around their own front doors before being so quick to criticize the dust on other folks' porches.
