I am SO glad I gave up singing.

I CANNOT touch what he's doing.

Hopefully, when I write today, the art I have chosen will rise to this level.

Jaroussky has such a beautiful, pure alto. I love it. Thanks for posting!

This was once a class of singers known as Castrati. As the name implies, these were young men who at an early age were found to have such beautiful high voices that they were, yes, castrated... it was thought to keep the higher register voice well into adulthood. Many castrati became very famous in their day, and it is reported that the last known castrati died in the 1920s...

For modern hearing, and musical sensibilities, it is a strange occurrence to be at a concert, or even to hear this style of singing on an album, considering we are more used to hearing the female soprano and alto voices taking these parts today.
I remember a few years ago going to a performance during Christmas, of Handel's Messiah, and hearing the female parts played by modern castrati. It was disconcerting, obviously, but a very enjoyable experience. It kind of made me feel like I was back in the 17th and 18th centuries, attending an intimate concert of the nobility....

Remarkable voice. I note that he doesn't seem to have a very visible Adam's Apple, perhaps a natural reason for his exceptional voice.

In life the trick can be to find our own special place, to exploit whatever unique gifts we may have. If this young man has found his own special place then I admire & salute him.

And what glorious music. I am transported when listening to such incomparable beauty as this.

BTW, watch the entire lengthy clip. His speaking voice is not noticeably feminine, in my view. At the same time, all his hand & arm motion when singing seems a bit much, almost like he's conducting himself. Perhaps an indulgence during a studio recording.

His voice works wonderfully for Bach. Great music, and great performance.

I might be less convinced in a big Romantic aria.
