Baby circumcisions in US hospitals on three-decade decline

My observation is that circumcision in my own older US generation was even more common than these figures going back 30 years. I didn't see my first uncut until my teens, and at first thought the guy was deformed. icon_confused.gif

I had a Jewish friend who jokingly said that circumcision in the US was a conspiracy started by Jewish doctors shortly after WWII so that if Nazis ever came to power in the US they wouldn't be able to use circumcision to determine which guys were or weren't Jewish. Although I wasn't entirely sure that he was joking.

The WHO is pushing for circumcision in African countries with high HIV infections among heterosexuals. I'm guessing that the HIV virus can live for an extended period under the foreskin.

I've heard that said, too. But even if some US Jewish doctors were motivated by that purpose beginning in the 1940s, the circumcision movement in the US had begun 40-50 years earlier.

The impetuous appears to have been late 19th Century pseudo-science that targeted male masturbation as a terrible disorder, that would lead to insanity, homosexuality, dissipated lives, a population decline, etc. Not unlike the propaganda that comes from religious conservatives and the political Right regarding homosexuality & gay marriage today.

The quack doctors concluded that removal of the foreskin would discourage wicked & unhealthy male masturbation, by making it more difficult and less pleasurable. This was also the time when anti-masturbation mittens were sold for young boys. Made of the coarsest wool, they were cinched on tightly at night, and could be pinned to the outside of the bed blankets, to prevent boys from reaching down to their "privates".

And returning back to the Nazis, similar nighttime restraints were used on gay men in concentration camp barracks. Along with aversion therapy that SS head Himmler thought would "cure" homosexuals. So that modern gay reparative therapy actually has a long and infamous history.

Good! People are finally getting some sense: LEAVE THE FOREKSIN ALONE. There are a few people who may need to get circumcised for health reasons, but why should everyone else get circumcised?

One day I'm going to have kids, and I'm not going to circumcise them. I believe that they should have that choice to make. Most likely, they'll choose to keep it because foreskins are great to have.

When my son was born the doctor came in and asked when we should schedule the circumcision and I told him that child abuse does not have a place in a hospital.
A friend who had his son circumcised said he did so because he did not want his son to think he was different from his dad. I asked why not just explain that your parents were sheep and you decided to keep his body the way it was naturally designed?
If grown men want to be circumcised they should be able to make that decision, but to cut off part of a babies body for no real reason is insane.

Circumcision has always been a "sore point" (no pun intended) with me.

Wayyyyy back in the 1990's I got "into" body piercing. My temporary room mate was a tattoo artist/body piercer by trade and never had enough money for his share of the rent and utilities; so we "took it out in trade."

My parents, conservative southern Baptists, were uneasy about my choices, but remained silent...for the most part.

One day, after I/he/we had stretched my earlobes to some small flesh tunnels; my Father expressed concern about "my increasing trend of self-mutilation".

I calmly replied that I was surprised he would say that, considering the mutilation he and Mom did to me at birth, without my consent.

He looked puzzled for a nano-second, then turned brick red, stared at the floor, and rapidly hustled out of the room.

No more comments ever from either one of them about my body piercings! (lucky they couldn't see the other places!)

Good! I'm sure the decision for you has also been a bit eaier because of your Latino heritage. Most Latinos in the USA are intact/uncut. It's the black and the white Americans that still propagate this silly notion that it is "better for the child" if he is circumcised.
