In reaction, angry evangelist conservatives vow to secede and form a state simply called, "Old Mexico". icon_lol.gif

Not totally true, but with "North Colorado" on the horizon, it can't be far off.

and the County Clerks in 2 NM counties are issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples! (Santa Fe County, the capital, and Dona Ana county in the south of the state) - amid outrage and whining from the anti-gay religiofascists of course across the country. Not too much is heard here in NM except "Yay!"icon_biggrin.gif

OMG, very good friends of mine live in NM! I've tried to phone them, and sent a message to their FB. I don't know if this affects them, and if they will attempt to get married. I'd fly out there for it, and offer to be a flower girl for their wedding at the very least! icon_biggrin.gif

"The Elane Photography case has been frequently cited in state legislatures across the country as the basis for religious freedom bills."

Well, I guess they hitched their Republican anti-gay wagons to the wrong case. icon_razz.gif

Let them all move to AL, MS, TX and AZ. Then I will vote for their removal from the USA...

I'm wondering, though, how we protect the rights of people with sincere, if stupid, anti-homosexuality views? It's simply wrong to compel them to do things they find morally repugnant. After all, in America, you have the right to be wrong.

Don't misunderstand me: I believe the anti-crowd are stupid, scared and wrong. My brother is one of them - but I would not force him to participate. How do we deal with this in a legal, just fashion?

That is for the courts to decide. But the bubble people do not have a right to infringe on the lives of other people in order to satisfy their bubble requirements.

    ^^

Concur, whole-heartedly. But the question remains: how do we make sure they are not compelled to do things they genuinely believe to be wrong? Not for the courts to decide: this needs careful law-making. (Something I doubt we'll see in my lifetime, by the way.... )

As a person, the owner still has right to be wrong. She can state her views as much as she wants, and the government can't stop her. As a business, she does not have the right to deny gay or lesbian couples in New Mexico the same service she is giving to straight couples. We can argue whether they should have that right, but with the Supreme Courts refusal to hear the appeal, the lower court's ruling now stands, at least for now. They could always take another case in the future. Some people are morally repugnant to interracial marriages. Race is a protected class. Should we allow businesses to be able to refuse service to them? Some people are morally repugnant to other religions. Should we allow businesses to not serve them? Religion is a protected class. Some people are morally repugnant to divorce and to them remarrying. Marital status is a protected class. Should businesses be allowed to not not serve these people? Should we just scrap the entire Civil Rights Act because some business owners might find some people morally repugnant?

I used to be a liberal. Lately I've become more of a Jacobin. Where is our Robespierre?

The photographers are unfortunately free to believe what they want. We have the power of the pocketbook. We can take our dollars to photographers that are more than happy to take them. In a state as big as New Mexico I am sure that couple could have found a photographer that was more than willing to accept their business. I say spread the word on these repugnant photographers so that they lose business. Once it starts to hurt their pocketbook they will change their tune.

A portion of Tennessee attempted to succeed from Tennessee and called itself the state of Franklin. They even had their own governor, etc., but I doubt that anything like that will be attempted here in NM.

these places will not secede as it takes federal congressional approval.

    Northern Colorado
it would be nice to see them go. Not much up there to support the cost of creating a whole new bureaucracy and infrastructure. More cattle than people.
