What sick demented person would do such a thing! He is a hero ! a soldier! He deserved a peaceful passing being ushered in to the next life. But it make me honestly sick that ppl do this with out any disregard for human life. My prayers are with his family and friends.

At least they still have a death penalty in Washington. Hope they catch the guy and he gets it. We really ought to make execution a deterrent again, by cutting off their heads afterward, and hanging the heads from lampposts in the neighborhood, so everyone can see the wages of crime. They had the right idea in jolly old England.

This is all they have so far

"UPDATE: Press Release From The Spokane Police Department:

Spokane Police release surveillance photos of persons of interest in the homicide of an 88 year old man, occurring in N. Spokane last night. Anyone with information about either of the suspects is asked to call Crime Check at 456-2233.

On 08-21-13 around 8:15pm Spokane Police responded to Eagles Lodge, 6410 N Lidgerwood on a call of an assault. When officers responded they located a 88 year-old man in his car with serious injuries to his head. He was transported to the hospital where he died as a result of his injuries.

Spokane Police are looking for two suspects in the incident. They are described by witnesses as young African American males of average build.

Major Crimes Detectives are investigating the incident and are asking anyone with information to call Crime Check at 456-2233.
    Previous Coverage:

KHQ.COM - Police say two teens assaulted 88-year-old Delbert Belton outside the Eagles Lodge in North Spokane Wednesday night around 8pm. Belton was rushed to the hospital where he was placed in the intensive care unit but later died. Police are actively searching for two suspects. They are described to be 16-19 in age, black males & both wearing black clothing, one was wearing a black "Do-Rag" police say.

Family & friends of Delbert Belton tell KHQ's Dylan Wohlenhaus that Delbert was "full of life" at 88-years-old. They say Belton loved working on cars and helping out others. Belton also served overseas in the military in WWII.

Friends of Belton say he was wounded in WWII in Okinawa but survived. Police have not said if or what the motive was for the beating. Police believe this was a random attack.

A makeshift memorial has been set up at the crime scene to honor Belton."

Something that should never happen. America however lacks enough anger it seems to stamp such behavior out.

We occasionally hear of similar tragic stories here.

I`m afraid the UK and the US have demoralized their elderly with their obsessive interest in youth. Many other societies still value them. I`ve personally witnessed this lack of respect against my elderly mother.

But age here is something to be resisted at all cost. It is the worst possible fate, physically frail and ill, dependent on other people, lonely, isolated, losing touch, incapable, etc.; all the media stereotypes going.

Then there`s all the news stories about the growing elderly population and a declining work force to maintain them; how they are another problem.

All this adds up to a culture that increasingly despises the old; one of the worst social problems here, post Second World War.

So this case is shocking but not surprising. You can punish these individuals all you like, but they are just the extreme end of a growing trend of disrespect for old people in western societies.

I'm a real proponent of the Death Penalty for cases just like this, and the case of the jogger a few days ago - shot in the back, plus the Charlie Manson types - the cases where guilt is an absolute certainty. (I'm the first to acknowledge there are cases where the perp. is later found innocent, where his guilt was never certain beyond a reasonable doubt). I'm NOT talking about anything but cases where there was an innocent victim and a malicious murderer out for some fun, or hate crime activity, where guilt is absolute. Our prisons are so overcrowded. I would be in favor of a system that did not waste years on appeals, and instead a swift form of justice (Death)for murderers where guilt is absolutely certain.

    Agree!

I'm generally pro-life in all instances whether it be abortion or death penalty cases in most instances, but not this one or the Australian jogger in Oklahoma a few days ago or the Boston bomber.

This one just absolutely makes me sick ..... beat the 88 year old to death with flashlights .... I'm just stunned.

Of course it is tragic, but it is also rare, which is why this kind of thing makes headlines when it does occur. It is important to keep a sense of proportion.

I can think of a few people above who are strangely less outspoken when it comes to senseless gun-related multiple killings.

I'll bite, and you're wrong. Anytime there's a senseless murder, I call for the murderer to be executed. It's usually the left that argues against execution, and instead wants to find excuses for the murderer.

So 'the left' are apologists for murderers now. Aren't you always banging on about how others around here are too ready to 'label and condemn' . I suppose it's okay, provided you're the one doing the labelling and condemning.

Apparently the two killers were teen-agers, so the bleeding hearts on the Supreme Court wont allow them to be executed. Too bad they weren't shot by the police trying to escape.

In my opinion, if you're old enough to murder, you're old enough to be killed by the state.

You're correct. Only the Right is arguing for expedited executions, without full review & appeal, while the Left resists.

EXCEPT, we are routinely seeing the condemned proven innocent with DNA evidence, and released after unfair decades on Death Row. And only legislators on the Right, Texas being a good example, oppose giving these innocent people any compensation for their wrongful convictions, years on Death Row, and near executions.

But I do see where you're coming from. Execute them all without delay regardless, and let God sort them out.

I think candle light vigils tend to have more of a religious following than a political one.

I know of no such religion. I know plenty who support 'the right to life' though.

Show me a religion that supports killing the innocent accused. Well, except for the versions we see in the US.

Ever hear of extreme Christian fundamentalists? All cut from the same cloth, just referencing a different book to support their murderous designs.
