Does this seem like a widespread thing for gay guys to say umm when they stop to think or you catch them off guard.

I noticed it the other day back home, I noticed it when a gay couple were talking today..

I think it is kinda sexy the way most of them say it. Anyone else notice this..

    I think it's a HUMAN thing.

Are you sure that you've just noticed it among gay people? Or maybe you only hang out with gay people, so you haven't had a chance to notice that straight people do it, too?

In Japanese they say Eetoooo instead of ummm.

This tastes like grandma. I want some more!

It's just a null sound to indicate that the brain is still spinning up its hard disk to access that data.

The Spanish guys seem to go "el el el el"

I've been on a number of Discovery Channel shoots, and usually they find a shot and a message that they like, then it's, "let's try that again, with fewer ummm's."

Some guys used to go for the Jimmy Stewart drawl instead, but I'm not sure if that sounds any better than "ummm."

perhaps it is due to alot of gay men living a duel life. One part of said person may have a response whereas the other part may have a different one. The umm is signifying a shifting in thought process.

Or perhaps you ask really bizare questions or arent clear. Often times basic conversation skills are lacking in men who can be caught off guard by an open ended question.

Whenever I hear anyone speak I always listen if they say um. It's completely a anyone thing, not just gay guys. If that were the case, we would definitely be able to spot them easier. ;)

Somebody once showed me a little program called "the dude shell." It may have had other functions, but mostly I recall that it replaced the unix command prompt with:

    Dude! Like;

I think Phillip hit the nail on the head.

I notice a lot of times that their voices change too. It goes back to the putting on different faces for the situation.. or hiding that they are gay.

OBWISH you are cruel.. but hot for an older guy... ask AE guy what I look like. :)

ok I have 2 gay friends, one of which I don't really consider to be one anymore because he's truly trying to get into my pants, which isn't happening.

And my straight friends say um way more than they do. In fact continuously. Nothing more than an indication of uncertainty than anything.

In fact I hear it all day in class, and it gets really annoying when people do it during their presentations. A tiny report or something understandable but a presentation should be memorized word from word, then rehearsed to add emotional emphasis to areas in order to prevent a monotone performance and then timed.

Only if you're obsessive that is lol...
