WENT TO A BATHHOUSE A FEW DAYS AGO......

    I swear I am not a troll....

Here's a few surprising things I have learned....

    1) It wasn't a big deal as I thought it would be.....meh.....for those of you who has been to a bathroom can attest that it isn't like in the porn movie where crazy, dungeon sex would be happening. (They have these rooms where you can go in and have sex, kind of like a brothel actually) so that was surprising

    2) Even at the bathhouse, I notice that there's a lot of similar behaviors that you would find in a gay bar... like stealing glances (which is weird because I thought it would be a bit more straight forward in a bathhouse), lots of cruising without actually having sex (Gay guys are picky in general whether it's in a bathhouse or in a gay bar, compared to a straight bar or club where it's a lot more straight forward and laidback). Whenever I go to a "gay" place, I get a sense that gay guys are more highly strung, and uptight compared to straights.I don't know, I could be wrong.

    3) Gay guys do stick to their body type and "crowds". Bears hung out with bears, mature hang out with mature, twinks with twinks, jocks with jocks. I was the youngest at the bathhouse, and strangely enough I didn't get approached. I noticed that older patrons hook up with other old patrons. There were a very few glances but nothing straighforward. Most of the patrons were older, in their late thirties, forties and fifties. I didn't expect them to jump on me just because I am not-bad looking; they genuinely could be that they are not attracted to toned, athletic guys (though it's kind of difficult to imagine why not to). Or, some of them would have been stereotyping me that I would be too stuck up and doesn't want to risk getting rejected (I don't know what's going on in their head) but one thing for sure, I didn't get approached. So, maybe we do stick to our similar body types....

    4) You can go to a bathhouse without catching STDS or doing anything. I didn't do anything; I was just curious and it was an okay experience. Because of that experience, I now know how a bathhouse is set up at least.

    5) One thing that is still puzzling to me is why do people still go to bathhouse (one thing for sure from my experience of visiting there, there wasn't much sex happening at the bathhouse). There were some porn movies playing on some TV but muted (if I wanted to jerk off, I would have watched it at home with the sounds on). Also, you can pick up a guy from a gay bar easier than from a bath house.. You might argue that, "well, it's easier in a bathhouse because it's just purely carnal sex," You are wrong, nowadays, there are bars and clubs that older gay guys frequent, and you can pick up other older guys at those bars easily. Also, it's not cheap to go to a bathhouse, it cost me about $35 just to get in, whereas you can get about 3-4 drinks at a bar.

Your experience & observations match my own in some respects. As with gay bars & clubs there are good bathhouses and bad. I've had the good fortune to use the better. Plus I don't have guilt or reservations about having casual gay sex, nor reflexively condemn places that offer it. I'm a big boy and can handle myself, with enough will power and good judgment to insist on safe sex and not make careless mistakes.

As for the patterns in which patrons sort themselves (bears, older, twinks, etc) there can be another - fee level, as sometimes distinguished by color-coded wrist bands, or key wrist loops. The highest daily use fee may get you a private changing room where available, curiously provided with a bunk, along with a wrist band or key loop that proclaims it, say perhaps red in color.

A guy with a red band would be a special prize, independent of other considerations, as it also suggests he's there for serious sex, along with having a private place for it. I always just got a less expensive locker, because I was content with public steam room sex, though I sometimes was flattered by an invite into a changing room. But I did have to buy at least a 6-month membership, in addition to a daily use fee, so it was never really cheap, as you noted.

Bathhouse cruising has its own patterns. Some guys are very selective, more like in a gay bar. While others are fuck bunnies, running around naked with a hardon and offering to have sex with anyone. I think I fell somewhere in the middle. But I never left without having sex, and sometimes left with a guy. Usually just to have coffee or a bite to eat somewhere else, after several exhausting hours of non-stop orgy.

I don't visit bathhouses now because I'm married and we're strictly monogamous. I'm sure some monogamous couples could find entertainment there but not us. And they may still serve some function for single guys, even in our increasingly more accepting US society, which offers greater freedoms & options than in the past.

I guess I can see your point....I didn't really care so much for renting a room which cost more, since I wasn't plan on doing anything; I was just curious to visit.

Also, since you mentioned that, back in the old days where it's the only form of meeting guys anonymously without being busted by cops at public restroom, I guess it would be popular back in the days. In addition, I think if you are at a bar, you can pick up a guy or maybe two, whereas in a bathhouse, it's one after the another, provided that you don't care so much for what they look like, and that you are just there for pure carnal sex. right?

Lastly, I guess bath house would still be popular for those who are extra-closeted because of job, family, etc.
