Should Gays adopt children?

Here in Britain, back in 2000, a lttle girl by the name of Victoria Climbie was tortured and eventually murdered by her Aunt, and this made headline news, which still echoes across the nation to this day.
Then from last week we now hear and read about the horrendous treatment aimed at Baby P by his viscous, cruel stepfather, who is a Nazi supporter, and has a record for animal cruelty. The toddler was found dead in his cot, covered with bruises and other nasty injuries.
Heads are now rolling among the Social Services staff at the North London local authority, who should have noticed the warning signs and taken the child into care while he was still alive.
Within the last three years or so it has become legal for gay couples, whether two men or two women, to apply to adopt children that had either been seized from his abusive parents, or given up voluntarily by the parents themselves.
I feel ill-at-ease over the thought of a child being raised by gays, despite that I'm gay myself.
I would want my own children to grow up straight.
What is your opinion on this?
Also, adopting children by gays is now legal here in the UK. How is it in the United States?

Yeah, the only reason I'm gay is because my Mother and Father are also gay. Give me a break. icon_rolleyes.gif

    Ditto.

SOME gays should adopt or have children just like SOME straights should adopt or have children.

Why did you preface your question with stories of child abuse and murder?

Spend five minutes looking at the foster child program and you will change your tune. There are thousands of children who need good homes and there aren't enough for them. So these kids get sent to group homes where there outcomes are horrendous: very low high school graduation rate, elementary reading levels, and very poor job prospects.

Meanwhile there are gay couples who desperately want children. In most states gay couples can adopt or foster children. And thank god they can. Children left in the system fare much worse than children taken into loving homes.

    gay couples want children.
    Children want a home.

That to me sounds like a win win.

Why not? Sexual orientation and ability to raise children are not correlated as far as any stats. can prove.

If heteros were great at raising children all the time, our prisons would be nearly empty and psychiatrists would not be plying their trade. Fortunately for the misery economy some heteros are abysmal at parenting.

As for people "growing up straight" there seems to be little evidence for that. Sexual orientation seems to be hard-wired into the brain while in the womb. With any luck at all religious beliefs will evolve over the next several hundred years to accept the obvious.

i see no connection between good/bad parenting skills and sexual orientation. as said above, in the USA the laws vary from state to state.

one thing i find troubling about our foster system is that the state pays a stipend to the foster parents; sometimes this seems to become more like a salary and i've known (distantly) a woman who more or less turned it into a job. it's a short trip from there to orphan annie's cruel matron, relying on kids for extra income..

NOT that i have any better ideas about how it should be done. i just find the system troubling.

I am so sorry you have to go through this life loathing your gayness, wishing you were straight and then putting out there all your straight world ideas and how you think they should apply to the gay community as a whole. You are one of the ones that holds us back as a collective community that seeks justice and freedom and equality in a world filled with fear, injustice, predudice, insane ignorance, ego, and greed.

its not about the sex of the couple that is important, it is how much love can be given to the child.

so many stable gay couples could give children a massive amount of love and attention, give them a happy and stable home.

I'd ssay people like SurrealLife and MeninLove would be ideal candidates for having adopted children, a stable loving environment is the most important thing for a children.

i just adopted a 2.5 year old boy in july. he's in a much better place than he was with his birthmother (who was just 'too busy' to raise him). as for the rest of your post and wanting him to be straight, it's best you DON'T have children as you are seriously lacking in the mental capacity to do so.

Munching, In case no one is noticing, this is thematic with this poster - Notthatold. He dresses up the worst, most tasteless, wretched, homophobic crap as some sort of a question when all he is really doing is spewing hate. I seriously doubt this person is even gay. He certainly isn't looking for informed debate.

It never ceases to surprise me that his bait is taken.

All I can say to the OP is

    GO AWAY

MunchingZombie saidWhy did you preface your question with stories of child abuse and murder?

Living in one of the only States in the Union that doesn't allow gay adoption and where children founder here in the foster care system
it's basically child abuse perpetrated on these children who are denied people who will be there for them and love them

To those who want to get their heads out of their collective Asses....
and Read that there is NOTHING detrimental to a children whether they are raised by a loving man and woman...or two men or two women

As a matter of fact the ONLY difference that was found was that in a single sex household the children raised there were likely to be more tolerant of similar situations when they grew up

.... GOOD GOD WHAT WILL BE NEXT? icon_rolleyes.gif

Since when was being gay or straight dependent on your upbringing? Are your parents gay? If not, then how are you gay according to your logic?

I believe that in a few years once I've settled down I'd be perfectly capable of rasing children. If you don't think you're fit to do so, then don't.

I think a kid is better off with a responsible set of gay parents than in a foster home, but that's just me.

I helped my sister raise two kids because their father wasn't around.
I loved it mostly till they were brats and I had to time them out.
God i hate being the bad uncle sometimes, but kids got to listen.

Adopting kids.... now thats great and all but i really wanted my guy and I to
do that weird coctail thing where they mix both guys sperm and give it to a women so both guys dont know whos kid it will be.

I picutre me and my husband and our kids having a great life.
Taking them to school every day and watching them grow, when
they grow up and have kids they are who you raised them to be.
But first things first, you need a great relationship. Being gay, its hard
to find a great guy. Maybe Ill just have a kid and raise it on my own.
I really dont want to date anymore and recently lost the only person
ive loved. Maybe a kid will be my meaning of life

Having gay parents does not make you gay, any more than having straight parents makes you straight.

As one example, my lesbian cousin and her partner have a teen son who is one of the coolest and smartest kids you will ever meet, and he likes girls.

Being same sex attracted isn't something you can be raised to be. You either have some degree of same sex attraction or you don't plain and simple.

The reason I say some degree is because not all male brains are equally affected by testosterone. The more affected your brain is to the hormone testosterone the stronger your attraction to the softer form of a female and vice versa.

But I digress, the OP obviously had no intention of making a logical statement. icon_rolleyes.gif

Any couple or individual who has the maturity and who is mentally, emotionally and financially stable and is wanting and willing to give a kid a loving home and great education should be allowed to adopt kids, regardless of their sexual orientation.

Just because you are gay doesn't mean your child is going to be one. Being gay is biological..did you choose to be gay? Like duh!!!
