What does "All-American" mean?.....

Shouldn't the term All-American mean just that---all Americans? Shouldn't it be an all-inclusive term instead of being a narrow exclusive archaic one that means eugenically blonde & blue-eyed surfer types with Eurocentric features? Even a Scandinavian or Bel Ami looking Czech guy fresh off the boat who doesn't speak English will be considered All-American before a fourth generation Asian or black guy born in the USA, let alone the original All-American---the indigenous American Indians. In 2013, using the term All-American in it's old connotation feels like ur stuck in the past---it's so A&F. All-American in 2013, should mean just that---all Americans, in all it's melting pot diversity & array of colors & incarnations.....

Clearly, it's just one more reason for someone to get their panties in a twist. We don't ever want to run out of those!

What gets my goat is that all these "All-Americans" are young! They're always somewhere between 18-25. When have you ever seen a 40 year old called All American?

Don't even bother. You are directing your question to a website of predominantly young gay white males. This is not a concern to them.

It's just a marketing ploy. It means nothing, we all get to define it ourselves.

Yes, etymology would say, "WTF! How did something meant to be all-inclusive become an exclusive term?".....

The post above mine says it is currently changing in bold print. But I asked you when was, as in past tense, it used as an all-inclusive term.

I started a thread about this about 7-8 months ago! All AMerican boys/guys. It means 4 things to me:

1/ Gay magazines All American boys
2/ A Closed clothing shop in SF
    3/ Abercrombie white boys models
4/ Just white people looking all blond/brunette

No one is demographically All-Americans unless you're Native-American/Indians but even those peeps, I think their ancestry are from Asia!

    here is the link.

I think that the term "All-American" refers to young, white, blonde, athletic males. The first thing I picture when I hear "All-American" is:

    tumblr_lgh1oppX551qzee2po1_500.jpg

    tumblr_lde2wjZUcc1qe3o8ho1_500.jpg

Pretty much the guys you'd see in an A&F catalog.

Even though I was born and raised in America, I don't think society would think of me as "All-American". I guess the connotation is changing along with demographics (like Sharky posted), but that's still what most people think when they hear it.

All-American is meant to describe what is considered quintessentially American. Like football and cowboys. White men are used to describe the term because the country is historically white. America was started in 1507 by Europeans, named after the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci. Europeans are the original Americans.

he's right. they're NOT. the native americans are the original americans.

PC nonsense. As I explained in the post America began in 1507, not 11,000 BC or w/e. Europeans called themselves Americans. Pocahontas and Dancing Bear called themselves Powhatan, Cherokee, Cocktaw, etc.,not American. I guess that makes me an original American. I was born in America, I'm a native American. icon_razz.gif
