Are the RJ forums a place for incendiary remarks?

Decided to start this post after I saw a previously unsourced racial slur posted on a politically-themed thread.

I asked someone to source it for me, and in fact, the language was used, in context, in an LA Times article titled "Al Qaeda's No. 2 leader uses racial epithet against Barack Obama."

Politics aside, I'm just surprised that anyone would consider reprinting language that's generally considered to be racially sensitive - offensive even, on one of our forums.

Especially when we, too, are a group that is subject to equally hateful speech.

Am I out of bounds, or do you think that incendiary remarks are appropriate when making a point on the boards here?

    Good point,

I would say that if you are quoting them in order to illustrate something which expresses a view counter to the quoted one, then it is appropriate but to post an incendiary remark by itself is a no - no.

This is a DISCUSSION forum and I think barring anything is counter productive to that end. Especially since this sounds like a quote, and if it was quoted for the purpose of DISCUSSION, than, no, there is not a problem.

Wasnt that use of the racial slur one of the major point of the report about that message from that #2 guy? So it was appropriate to repeat it. Otherwise, the point would be lost. This was all over the news.

I don't think there's anything wrong with discussing newsworthy mentions of racially incendiary quotes.

However, I think COJock's issue was the particular use of this quote. The quote was used in the middle of a diatribe against Obama, so it came off as "Obama's this, Obama's that, Obama's going to cause armageddon, by the way, the terrorists are calling him this, and things are going to get worse." The person posting wasn't railing against the incendiary remark; he was using it in his anti-Obama post.

Hmmmm, there's lots of guys on RJ that make up their own incendiary remarks in flame-wars.

If it's a quote from an article or report that's being discussed, then it shouldn't be edited or reworded into PC language.

***** **** saidDont listen to GG. He hasnt learned the art of compassion yet.

Im not swayed by big black cock fantasys here, which some of the other posters are. And I know GG doesnt have one anyway, most huge roided guys are roided to make up for loss in penile size.

GG didnt come out smelling like a rose, only fitting comments enhanced by roid rage. The guy is obviously 27 with a MidState inferiory complex, hopefully for him the same is in store at 51 karma works like that you know. How can you talk about someone whos depressed having grammatical errors. Im happy and there will be some in this post to. Fuck him.

JoggerVA's got my sentiment exactly, and GG's post above just confirms what I think, and that's that the boards have gotten sort of ugly.

I'm not seeing as much DISCUSSION (in all caps for you GG). I'm all for a contrary viewpoint. I just see no need to flame someone and to get nasty. Look at that horrid paragraph! I've disagreed with people on here, but I've never tried to "cut them down" in the process.

As far as the original remark, I really think that if the posting had been "Hey guys, this is newsworthy, look what has been said in the news" that's one thing ... but to rant in a dissenting opinion and use slurs unsourced, I just don't see the point.

Had I not asked someone to source the slur, I would have just thought that the guy who posted it had a poor command of our language.

Here we go, I'm gonna open myself up to a bunch of "well if you don't like the boards then stay off" blah blah blah posts....eff that.

We're a self-policing community. And we deserve to speak to each other with respect. ( And, quite frankly, the terms of use on this site specifically prohibit hate speech. )

Well, most times, humor can be found, such as what the mystery-poster- from-another-thread posted:

How can you talk about someone whos depressed having grammatical errors.

But the difference in the use of derogatory words and phrases is the difference between objective and subjective. Objective is to report something as a third person. Subjective is when someone uses the slur to express their sentiment.
