One of my American friends posted this link on Facebook today. This survey pinpoints which dialects of US English your speech is most similar to. I am a Canadian born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and grew up nearby, so the fact that Seattle came up as the city with speech most similar to mine comes as little surprise. Even if you're not American it's still fun - try it!

I'm surprised when I meet someone from Brooklyn who doesn't have an accent.

I have a combination of my parent's Bronx accent, and my own Long Island accent.

My Dad was born in Brooklyn but grew up on Long Island and Connecticut.

Mom was born and raised in South Jersey.

    They don't have accents either.

My "most similar" city is Columbia, SC!? What's weird about that is, both my parents grew up there. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

That survey was kinda silly because I say more than one thing for a lot of the synonyms, like the insect which is a crustacean. And I cheated more than once. Haven't said "the devil's beating his wife" for a long time (I go with "sunshower") but I was surprised to see it 'cause my mom still says it. I use "you guys" and "y'all" interchangeably depending on who I'm with too. Etc etc blah blah blah ("yadda yadda yadda" if you're from NYC or watched "Seinfeld." icon_smile.gif )

Interesting. I've lived my entire life (thus far) in the south, but I'm told by many people that I don't have much of a discernible accent. (But boy, I did when I was a kid!) This quiz seems to be mostly based on choice of words/expressions, rather than pronunciation. So, in those terms, yup—I am definitely a product of my geography.

Those people, as well-intentioned as they might be, are incorrect. Every single person on the planet has an accent, because every single person uses some form of phonology to articulate and phonology varies worldwide...

It might be more accurate to say that your phonology is somewhat heterogeneous, perhaps due to travel, perhaps due to the people living around you, or perhaps due to the "neutral" mid-west accent that you'd hear on TV from US newscasters and various actors/actresses.

Bosh. We Detroit people have no accent at all. We're the only ones who don't. Certainly Canadians have a definite accent---yeah, that's you I'm talking aboot.

    You're perpetuating a language/accent myth Sharky...stop that icon_sad.gif

Ha well I tried it and, coming from the east coast of the UK, my nearest matches are in California and the leats likely in Texas.
