Recently got back from out of the country and I've heard jokes about Americans being fat. Compared to other countries, we are very bad with our diets.

Many Americans buy into myths about how all people on public assistance use their food allowances on liquor and lottery tickets, and have all the latest gadgets in their subsidized homes. Why, there's an example right in this thread! icon_rolleyes.gif

Gun-crazy, that's for sure. Too many people happily live down to that one.

What do you call someone who speaks two languages?
    Bilingual.
What do you call someone who speaks three languages?
    Trilingual.
What do you call someone who only speaks one language?
    American!

As a society we're obsessed with physical appearances and age, disrespect our elders, and trivialize our youth. (Uh...no shit!)

There is much to criticize about America but it is my country and I love her.France is falling apart with it's lazy population so Europeans might be skinnier but they got bigger problems to deal with. There are worse things than an extra 20 pounds.Just ask my gut lol

I think if you ask the French, they don't feel their country is falling apart. They have an excellent system of government supported child care, which makes having children and raising them much easier than in this country. And they also have what is often regarded as the finest system of socialized medicine in the world. I'm not advocating that we adopt any French programs, but the country is not falling apart any more than ours is.

According to me, the American stereotype is fat, gun toting, can't do without beef and cheese, is obsessed with baseball and soccer, and can't point out a majority of countries on a map.

    Where to begin?

Loud, boastful, think their country is better than any other, take criticism badly, lazy, hardly walk/drive everywhere, so many fat, constantly proud of their country, excessive and hypocritical about religion, obsessed with guns, greedy/selfish, hyper-individualistic, etc., etc.

The first American I ever met was at college in 1976 and, unfortunately, he conformed to many of the above stereotypes. His worse habit was to constantly run down my country even thought he`d chosen to live here! He lacked basic manners.

Just because a country has riots doesn't mean it's falling apart.

soccer?!?? I havent met one single US american that even likes football (soccer), not even 1! They just dont get it, call it a stupid sport (complain about the lack of goals, the divings, etc) so no, that's not a USA stereotype. You can say theyre obsessed with baseball, basket or american football but not football

Oh okay! But wait. I thought American football WAS soccer! Or is American football the game where they pick up the ball and run to score touchdowns?

Just to let people know :

"Recently, the CEO of a US manufacturer commented that his company would not invest in a factory in France due to concerns over the productivity of local workers. Surprised by these comments, Bob Hancké looked into statistics across Europe for labour market productivity and hours worked. He finds that French workers are nearly as productive as their American counterparts, and even more so than workers in Germany."

    full article here :http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/europpblog/2013/02/25/french-workers/

We do work 35 hours a week on a normal basis, but we usualy do 40-45 hours, but those extra hours gets higher rates ! Few things thats some american cant understand.
We are not lazy, we just don't work for peanuts ! We work for living, not live for working, and we don't need to have 2-3 underpaid work to live.
Morevover, on a hourly basis, we do produce more.
    http://www.businessinsider.com/are-the-french-the-most-productive-people-in-the-world-2009-8

Howerver since 2009, our economy did shack a bit (a lot). But isnt totaly our fault, subprime first, lehman brothers ( exactly 5 years ago this week),... Also Goldman Sachs (american)helped to sink Greek economy by making un-authorized transactions. We do pay off now for the last 20 years of uncontroled liberalism, with high risk stock exchange products. However, as a whole, Europe try to make it through. Greece is still in Europe, we still have the Eurozone, and have our health pretection (at least for now). Can US tell the same about Detroit for example ? Used to be the wealthier US city, and now ... Bankrupty ! Not sure with part will be the winner on the new trans-atlantic open market...

So can people just give french some rest, we def are not the richest, the smartset, def not the most liberalism country in the world, but we run our country for centuries, and we are still here, strong, happy(not to much in the last few years, but will comes back), and proud. France still attracts people, 82 millions of tourist came last year in France, ranked #1 in the world, it for a reason.
Don't get me wrong, I love America, but I also love Europe, and other countries in the world, but few things arent turning ou well.

    Now american stereotype:

    (-)

.Arrogant (yeah coming from a french, can def be shocking!)
    .Fat
    .Self centred
.No solidarity (Live Working or Die Fighting)
    .to conservative

(+) A lot, as I told before, I love US.

    .Strong
.handsome (not the fat ones lol)
    .Multiculural
    .Innovative
.... and the list goes on
