Interestingly, he was a great-nephew of Burill Crohn, one of the first to describe what's now known as Crohn's Disease. He died at age 66 due to his suicide.

He was among the first persons known to be caring for, and dealing with the grief of, a partner and so many friends succumbing to what we now know as HIV/AIDS, as far back as the late 70s.

His white blood cells' resistance to HIV, making him personally immune, intrigued researchers to find others with similar immunity, contributing to the treatments and vaccine research being pursued today.
