I've commented on many race threads, but this is my first Race Thread! icon_cool.gif

Why is race usually brought up in the forums/comment sections of negative news stories that center on a black person?

For example, today there were two stories on Towleroad that centered on black persons and their race was immediately came up. Whenever there are stories where a white person commit a similar action or say something similarly offensive, their race is never brought up.

Why do you think this happens?

PS. Until you've had the history of being taken from your land and enslaved, verses being a victim of a land invasion and have almost all of your culture killed and destroyed could you hope to understand what and why most have an issue with "race" and the privilege that comes with the "fairest" skin of all. icon_neutral.gif

    Do they?

Not to be a jerk, but I don't really understand what you're saying. Can you expound on this?

You're white, aren't you? If so, there's no need to say anything else. It's like someone whose wealthy, "not rich" saying how can anyone be poor or have ISSUES with it?

If you're intelligent as you attempt to come across as, you can figure this out.

PS: I actually think you did this just to stir a shit pot and like always someone of color like myself jumps into it. Enjoy the drama, you've invited. icon_rolleyes.gif

I come from a mixed family, but I look black and identify as black.

Should a black person's race take center stage whenever they do or say something people generally find objectionable? Take these comments from these articles for example:

    1. http://www.towleroad.com/2013/09/gmhc-ceo-marjorie-hill-fired-by-organizations-board.html#comments

I suspect there were plenty of White Gay men, living with HIV that applied for the job that were equally qualified, maybe more so. Now the organization is hurting. Bad choices are not fun.

Oh my... An under belly exposed. Some people are so tied to liberalism, they are blind. As long as things look PC -- A woman, an African American. Six years to figure out she was packing acid?

Being a Canadian, I am not familiar with this organization or situation. However, from the photo, the woman who was fired looks like she is black.
This being the U.S.A. expect her to sue, play the race card in some way and go after big bucks. Brace yourself. Things are going to get ugly.

I wonder where Derrick From Philly is to defend this guy's actions???

It's not his fault he did it, it's society's fault. Society is racist and so he isn't to blame.

Maia black commit more violent crime that's a statistical fact it would be idiotic to not be more apprehensive its called survival if you want to die then that's on you. Bet this couple will be watching over their shoulder from now on.

    POSTED BY: LEE | SEP 19, 2013 2:30:29 PM

You can bet if the roles were reversed and a group of gay teens attacked a black person, all the black posters, especially gay blacks, would be trying to shame the entire gay community with homophobic remarks bashing all gays. Yet the roles reversed and we have to ignore the obvious.

Racism is stuck in a perpetual loop like some
    animated.gif

Gaining rights doesn't end the fight.

Just as marriage rights will not end homophobia which has 1000s of years of momentum behind it as does racism.

"The condition upon which God hath given liberty to man is eternal vigilance; which condition if he break, servitude is at once the consequence of his crime and the punishment of his guilt. "~~John Philpot Curran, circa 1790

letsgetreadytosuckit saidwhat i wanna know is why do people have to mention someone's skin color when it doesn't matter?

That's just what the OP is asking. And that's racism. Same thing happens to gay people.

I've a bit of a red-neck-ish neighbor, not a bad person, but not quite worldly, who never can mention a Jewish person without noting that the person is Jewish. She doesn't do it to me to my face but I know she does it whenever she mentions me because we've a rented house nearby owned by a guy who happens to be Jewish and she has never, not once, mentioned him or the house without noting that he's Jewish. That's racism.

You might be able to curb it to some degree one person at a time, but until there's some great shift of the collective consciousness you will not live to see it purged from this world. So it is up to you to find ways to live comfortably enough given the fact of its existence. Or not only do they get to beat you up, but you beat yourself up too.

letsgetreadytosuckit saidall this shit about race, racism and etc is fucking depressing because nobody wins.

When I see someone on here being ageist, doesn't even have to be directed towards me, I simply click that poster onto ignore. I know that crap exists but I don't have to look at it. There's lots of stuff on here I avert my eyes to. Just because someone or something or life tries to put something in your face doesn't mean you have to look at it.

letsgetreadytosuckit said...another thing that i don't get is why people just can't look @ a person for who they are, what they do and always looking @ someone for which group they can be labeled....

Our brains naturally make associations and groupings and seek out patterns, etc. If you want to understand that better, study a bit of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gestalt_psychology

Thinking you are dumbing yourself down so as to be understood is no different than putting on an air of superiority. Instead, try simply speaking in the vernacular.

letsgetreadytosuckit said...to give up and say "that's the way it is" is basically telling whoever's doing the abuse or being fucked up is right...

...sometimes, walking away is the best solution but if you can actually knock some sense into somebody where they can walk away with something and spread the shit to other people, why not do it...

letsgetreadytosuckit saidwhat i wanna know is why do people have to mention someone's skin color when it doesn't matter? icon_neutral.gif for example, i see folks always having to mention someone's skin color, ethnicity or whatever when pointing out so and so if it's someone who is of a different color or ethnicity as them when referring to that person in a conversation. "that white guy over there", "the black guy", "the arab guy" especially if they know his or her name too and can easily describe whoever so someone else knows who they're talking about without having to point out their skin color. icon_sad.gif

hell, it irks me whenever i go to a tumblr, some porn shit and there's a video or a picture with a black guy in it and they have to say "ebony" or "black man". WHAT THE FUCK, MAN? i HATE the word ebony. what the fuck is that supposed to mean? "ebony". also don't appreciate how porn studios try to fetishize blacks in there like segregate them away from everyone else like "next door ebony" or worse, something blatantly racist where they're like "fucking with thugs" or something like that where they actually have a some white guy that gets raped by a black guy who carries himself like a thug where he's dressed up a certain way and etc. all that shit needs to stop especially in the gay world. no need to bring that shit in there then yap about tolerance under the same breath.

    I'm with you.

    It's really sad.

    Question:

Is what some people call the school to prison pipeline and prison industrial complex tied to our society's implicit racism?

    GooberGeek saidQuestion:

Not real familiar with the topic, sorry. Giving it a glance, infinitesimally less of a look than the subject deserves but just to get a general idea of your reference, I'd say, first, that your question is huge.

Here's two wiki's that seem to touch on it

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_and_crime_in_the_United_States

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School-to-prison_pipeline

Out of the school system for many years and not having had even a criminology class since my 20s, I had no idea this problem so pervasive today. What I just read about zero-tolerance policies adding to this issue makes intuitive sense, though I doubt that a matter of racism, but of paranoia & overprotection & covering the corporate ass. I thought it a stupid policy way before I'd ever have connected that to race.

So just at first thought, if by "tied to" you mean a cause which can be corrected, I'd, possibly controversially, say no. It looks to me like more of a symptom such that even if the symptom was alleviated--as it should be--the cause would remain. Maybe the cause would be lessened or maybe that boil would pop up someplace else.

Racism is not a product of this society, not ours to export. It's more of an import from history. Maybe it can be regulated but I don't know if you'll ever see it eliminated. Elimination would require a shift in world consciousness. So where are we headed?

Well, currently we have the Chinese buying up African resources to exploit into their industrial future. What are the odds of that improving race relations of the world? I suspect it will fall into the same old patterns, only now, by population size alone, there could be more of it.
