"So pensieve", she said, as I blew out a puff of smoke. "Hmm?" "I said you looked pensieve. Staring out beyond the traffic. What are you thinking about?" I smiled in response, flicking the ash off the cigarette. "Nothing special. Work, breakfast, evening socialising." "Well, it suits you. That brooding expression", she said, almost blushing. "What does that mean?" "Nothing, silly!", she responded, twirling a lock of her hair around her index finger. "Come back in, breakfast is almost ready, you need to eat up so we can collect tons of data today!" "Yep, in a bit. Lemme finish this?", I said, signalling to my half burnt out Marlboro. I could swear she giggled as she skipped back into the restaurant.
Work had been difficult this season, and volunteers hard to come by. I'd finally asked a junior of mine to help me, she seemed thrilled to come. I pinned it on the romanticism of working in the forest, and thought nothing more of it. The work WAS fun. Trudging through dense undergrowth, searching for spiders. The occasional raptor silencing bird calls all around, the rare leopard kill, and the scuttling mud-crabs painted a very pristine picture of the National Park. It was easy to fall in love with the place. Proximity to the city was just a bonus. Good food just an hour away, what more could one want?
"Are you coming?", she quizzed, poking her head out the door. "Yep!" She gave me that beaming grin again, and my heart sank deep.
Sigh, if only. If only she knew that over my daily cigarette, I'd been longingly 'window-cruising' some of the hot college boys walking by.

    - Yours truly,
    Araneidude.

Nothing next, Es El Fini. I'll be writing more random stuff about being a gay field biologist, hope I have a post tracker in you!

This has nothing to do with the theme of a post, but I'm getting over writer's block at the moment. So here's something that I wrote at a Conference workshop last week. The activity was to create a character, and portray ambition. I've been told my sense of humour is rather obscure, feel free to mail me if it is.

    30/09/2013 - Anna

Anna lay silently in the corner on a gunny rag, her eyes shrivelled from being out in the sun all day. Her face was covered in dirt. She wanted, more than anything, to be out in the fields. Her mission, once upon a time, had been to reach out to the sky. Alas, she was uprooted, and with her, her dreams.
And so, she lay silently. The skies would never be hers to touch, the clouds- but distant shapes. She had wept, long ago, but she had dried up now. She had come to accept her fate, with an air of resignation. Or so she thought.
For, without realising, Anna had begun dreaming again. "Neat and orderly, to be taken with a pinch of salt; ooor... Round and absurd, quite the saucy lass?" And so, her dreams, yet again, took her places. You see, Anna was just a potato.

    -Yours truly,
    Araneidude.
