    The not so ordinary guy.

    Hey Alterative Real Jocks,

Being From San Francisco I run into a lot of alterative in great shape guys. I am one myself. What I have notice is that I think my style kind turns off many of the conservative gays that I run into, or try to chat with. It’s nothing I want to change. I am proud of the fact that my style turns way one dimensional robots that will only walk away from me eventually. So do you alt guys get any flack for being who you are? Are you judged harshly because of your style, your interest, and your fashion sense?

If you don’t know your alterative here are a few signs that you might be…

    1. You had body paint all over your naked body.

    2. You have more than one costume in your closet and it’s not for Halloween.

    3. Your pretty comfortable being nude around anyone.

    4. You have very strong spiritual beliefs that you have even traveled to for fill them.

    5. Most of your clothes are vintage.

    6. You incorporated yoga poses in your profile pictures.

    7. You have a tattoo that has a spiritual meaning behind it.

    8. In love making incense, candles, and massage goes all together.

    9. You have art pieces in your home that no one really understands.

    10. Tight straight leg jeans is the staple of your style.

    11. Add something else here___________________

Does this sound like you? If it does I wanna tell you that I love you for it!

You just look very camp to me.

Vintage is just another word for second hand.

dreamdrop....LMAO! Wow, are you for real? Ok, I have to flame you now...(btw take it lightly...im not attacking you...just this ridiculous thread you started)

dreamdrop saidThe not so ordinary guy.

You mean like every other gay guy who uses this as an excuse to show off their bodies during Halloween and every other circuit party. How alternative!icon_rolleyes.gif

    2. You have more than one costume in your closet and it’s not for Halloween.

Who DOESN'T have costumes stashed away in their closet? Now THAT would be alternative. Everyone has a stash of freak clothes. You're starting to sound completely normal, just like everybody else. Let's look at #3...

    dreamdrop said
    3. Your pretty comfortable being nude around anyone.

Really? Because gay jocks NEVER strut around naked in the locker room or at any other place they think they could get away with taking off clothes, right? In fact, gay jocks are so ugly from working out at the gym all the time, that they shower with their clothes on.

    dreamdrop said
    4. You have very strong spiritual beliefs that you have even traveled to for fill them.

*yahn* If it's not a conservative believing in Jesus it's a hippy believing in the spiritual wind, reincarnation, karma, blah blah blah. It's really old, and definitely not alternative.

    dreamdrop said
    5. Most of your clothes are vintage.

Almost every gay jock went through a phase where they worked at A&F years ago and still keeps their clothes. Moreover, 80s vintage is in style, has been for years, and probably won't ever go out of style.

    dreamdrop said
    6. You incorporated yoga poses in your profile pictures.

Okay, I'll give you that one. That's pretty queer alternative.

    dreamdrop said
    7. You have a tattoo that has a spiritual meaning behind it.

Every idiot has a tattoo that's either in an Asian language/symbol, or some other spiritual/religious thing like three Hebrew letters, signifying something so stupid like "harmony" or "power" thanks to pop culture. Look, now you've burned it into your skin to look cool like everyone else....er I mean alternative. Don't get me wrong, tattoos are hot, and I'm more likely to have sex with you the more tattoos you have. But none of them are alternative unless of course you tattoo your face or the glans of your cock.

    8. In love making incense, candles, and massage goes all together.

Sounds like a scene to every cheap soft-core porno ever made, not to mention every other gay guy I hook up with (and yeah, they're jocks)

    9. You have art pieces in your home that no one really understands.

Do you ever travel to anyone else's home? If so, you'll realize that every gay man has something stupid hanging up on their walls that holds significance only to them and looks dumb to everyone else, even though they pretend that it looks nice. Even I have something stupid hanging up on my wall. I have a picture of a world map. I like it because I love starring at maps for long periods of time.

Tight straight leg jeans are what every indie-follower going to the concert has been wearing for the past year. Welcome to another fad.

Do you still think you are alternative?icon_eek.gif

Interesting premise. To your number 11 I'd add that you seem to be having a great time with your life, and perhaps a 12, that you have a great smile. Even if those aren't necessarily "alternative," just happily fortunate.

I only match 3 items from your list: being comfortable nude, a few costumes for non-Halloween purposes, and vintage clothes. And the last is just the result of being an old guy who doesn't throw stuff out, not so much a deliberate style choice.

If I get "judged harshly" it's by twinks because I don't act, talk & dress like them. But that would make me look silly, as they would themselves if they tried to be like me. I think a lot of it is normal generational differences of attitude & style.

I'm not sure about the cause-and-effect of things in this case. Couldn't these things also be the symptoms of difference, rather than the cause? Assuming they really are so different, as jakebenson questions.

Erm, I was agreeing with every point you were making until I read this which I found to be extremely disrespectful. Assuming that everyone who has a spiritual tattoo or a tattoo with asian / eastern characters is an idiot (or "alternative"), well, t's not nice.

Hmmm, I have a few tatts that do have a meaning..spiritual? Hmm not quite but they do fall in the eastern / asian category, I have hebrew, sanskrit and tibetan..Does that make me an idiot? NO. Do I regret getting those tattoos? NO.
While it may be true for others, I didn't get them to "look" like everybody else or to follow a trend. I did it because they represent something about me and my personality and where I have been / am going in life.
Chinese characters? Nah, now that would be looking like everybody else. Would I think someone is an idiot for having a tatt of a chinese character? No. That would be generalizing and as we know, generalizations can be very damaging (e.g. All gays are perverts, all whites are racist, all latinos are homophobes..get it?) and is putting a whole lot of very different people in one category where they don't necessarily belong.

I do agree that there are a lot of people out there who do things, like getting a certain tattoo or dressing a certain way, in order to fit in and do what everybody else is doing. Others though, do it because they genuinely identify with the style. Doing things for the sake of fitting in is just silly.

I'm always told I don't look gay enough.

My fault for hanging with homos for one.
My fault for putting on jeans and whatever t-shirt is around.
My fault for wearing plaid shoes with a stripped shirt ( I get so much shit for this)

Who fucking cares, i dont need to dress up or look a certain way for anyone.Lol not to be cocky but I'm still the guy everyone wants every where we go.

    ha-ha that was arrogant.

Not to be offensive, but some of those smell suspiciously like unwashed hipster douchebag, which I hope is not the "alternative" you are going for.

You know, being tattooed myself, I would rarely ridicule anyone else's tattoo. You have to admit though that the whole "spiritual body art" genre has been sort of commercialized. I'm not trying to insinuate that you yourself, nor anyone else's tattoos are a result of trying to "look cool", I'm just saying it is always a little suspect. And you flying off the handle in the defense of your tattoos makes you a bit suspect.

I am very vocal and I don't care to be put in the "idiot" category based on what kind of tattoos I have, which is why I "flew off the handle" Wouldn't you feel insulted if someone said that people with tattoos (in general, not just one category) are idiots?
You can suspect me, fine, it is your prerogative. I love my tatts, I am proud of them and if I got them to "look cool" or not that is MY prerogative. If someone decides to judge me based on the kind of tattoos I have rather than getting to know me then they were not worth it to begin with. There are people out there who have sheep herd mentality and do whatever is in style and go with whatever trend is out there regardless of whether it looks good on them or if they agree with them. I am not one of those. You don't know me so I don't expect you to believe me but pls. try not to make assumptions about me or who I am or why I do things.

No I wouldn't feel insulted. I have heard that before, and I'm sure I'll hear it again. It's generally in the form of some remark such as "Ugh, tattoos are so ugly, anyone who gets on must just be stupid and classless." Ironically, most of the people who say it don't know that I do have a tattoo, and then feel awkwardly embarrassed when I tell them I do. If I feel I know them well enough, or, you know, care enough, I'll at least explain that there are many motivations for getting tattoos, and gently educate them on why people like to get tattoos. On the other hand, usually I just ignore them.

DigitalGhost_ saidI'm not here to brag so I'm not going to mention a list of specifics of why I am not an "idiot".

You say you're not an idiot. Great, but you're getting bent out of shape about a silly matter of personal choice. That just doesn't seem intelligent.

You're not getting my point. I am not getting bent out of shape. I merely said that putting everybody who has a certain type of tattoo in the "idiot" category is disrespectful. His choice of words every disrespectful. I would appreciate it though if you did not use such condescending tone with me..and let's just agree to disagree on this one.

Labels...you seem to judge yourself by them and get bothered by others who use them. I hate being put into a neat little category, whether it's alternative, muscle jock, clubster, etc. Just enjoy yourself, which you're clearly doing, and don't worry about what anyone else thinks. By they way...very fun pictures on your profile.

i agree with the guy above me. you seem hung up on labels and possessions, desperately trying to shoe-horn yourself and everyone around you into a label, and using possessions to do so. for describing such a flaming gay hippie image to us, you yourself really don't seem all that artistic or open-minded or unique..
those things come from a place in yourself that gets defiled the more you insist they're there to others... those things tend to speak for themselves and have nothing to do with yoga postures, body paint, or skinny jeans...

You're right, we disagree. Mostly because I don't think what he said was all that offensive. I think it was blunt, but honest. Because there are a LOT of those idiots out there who have done exactly as he has described. So you're not one of those idiots. Good on you.

Also, leaving aside that I'm typing, and therefore my words are toneless, I'm almost always condescending.

Every idiot has a tattoo that's either in an Asian language/symbol...that is what he said..every means ALL..including me so yes, it was offensive. The rest of his entry I can agree with though. Calling people an idiot because they are following a trend or not is not polite. I may disagree with them, I may not understand why they do it but I wouldn't go as far as insulting them. I guess I have too much respect for people still, even for those with who I disagree.

And I'll leave it at this, obviously we have different points of view and different approaches on how we treat and talk to people, on or offline.
