Listened to the entire Kristina från Duvemåla by Ulvaeus Andersson. Easily one of the most beautiful operas of all time, certainly the most beautiful contemporary opera.
This aria is haunting and powerful, a great encapsulation of the entire work. It loses a little context as it's performed in the YouTube video below, in concert as opposed to staged, but it's still amazingly powerful lyrically and musically both. It's beyond believe in the original Swedish, staged.
By the way, nothing against Susan Boyle, who's an amazing singer and performer, but her version is a very poor second (maybe even third or farther to a few others whom we've heard perform Kristina over the last 15 years).
