Has anyone seen the recent documentary on Ed Koch? I saw it last night, pretty interesting. There was also a Q&A with the director/producer Neil Barsky, who told about his experiences with Koch while making the documentary.
By the way, to add to the feeling, I saw this film in a 140 yr old theater called Theater Three in Port Jefferson, NY. Maybe not as exciting as a hip dance club, but I found it a pleasant evening.

I could use a fresh perspective on Koch because I've seen him naked. Lots.

In 1999 I briefly belonged to New York Sports Club on 51st and Lex and I'd oftentimes see him weighing himself naked on a scale directly in front of the entrance to the men's locker room or in the waiting area of the physical therapist's office on a row of chairs out in the open on the gym floor underneath the type of wall of celebrity client head shots you'd see in a diner.

I really wish there were camera phones then because I'd have taken a picture for the ages, the type that would've been the "Just One More" photo on the last page of "Life Magazine" - one day at the gym there was Koch seated in the public waiting area, almost unrecognizable, hair ratted and askew, crusty-eyed in a ragged undershirt seated directly beneath the perfectly coiffed, tailored image of his own professional headshot. The contrast was both startling and hysterical. I can only leave you with that mental image, which will hopefully obliterate the one of him naked that still gives me nightmares.

NYC has been prohibitively expensive for decades, especially Manhattan. Ed wasn't bad, he was honest and straightforward, just narcissistic. I used to listen to his radio show in the 90s, and read his newspaper columns. Too bad there aren't more politicians like him.

I'm sure taxes have a lot to do with high rents.

Please produce the hard evidence for this assertion.

Oh, no, you're right, taxes are really cheap in NYC, especially Manhattan. It's just those greedy landlords.

    And include property taxes.

When you've finished with that to my satisfaction, I need weeds removed from my flower beds.

I would be interested to see it. I ran into him once at the Union Station in DC. He was much taller than I thought he would be.

He was a colorful character, and I'm not sure New York was the better or worse because he was mayor. There were always rumors about his orientation, but he was discreet about his private life, and no one knew for sure.
