Losing your motivation between running events

    hi guys,

    I did the Cheltenham Half Marathon 10 days ago and got a great time (for me!). Worked hard, trained hard and was really looking forward to it.

    I now have another half marathon on Sunday in Nottingham (er...these are in the UK, I know the vast majority of you guys tend to be across the pond but its a friendly website and the American guys tend to be hotter...er....ANYWAY). I have completely and utterly lost my motivation beteween the runs!

    I am pretty certain it will come back to me on the day but I really do feel like I cannot be bothered doing the run. Any tips on how to get a motivation back for a run appreciated. Think tips/bribes/threats with a baseball bat etc.

    Seriously does this happen with anyone else? I think I was so motivated to do the Cheltenham half, I may have burnt myself out!! Maybe I won't do half marathons so close together next time...

    I dont think you should go. It takes up a lot of your time and you could be better off doing other things. I dunno what you could do but its better than running. You enjoy this kinda stuff? I dont think you will get a good time on Sunday. Find other passions. You say you dont feel motivated, listen to your instincts. Dont do it! (Is it working?)

    Sounds like you might be experiencing overtraining symptoms. One of the main symptoms is lack of motivation. Our brains have a way of making us uninterested in things that are hurting us. Marathon running is very taxing on the body and mind. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any animal that runs vast distances without stopping. The most benefit from running comes from sprinting, not long distance. If you're doing this for health benefits, you might want to check out the studies on the effects of marathon running on overall health. If it's something you just love doing, there are certainly worse hobbies you could be doing, so if that's the case, I would just put a little more time off between marathons.

    Half marathons, while not as taxing on a body as full marathons, still take a lot out of you. Unless you're planning on just jogging through your next race and using it as a training run, you have to give yourself a longer break in between races. Your body needs an opportunity to rest and rebuild between races. Especially with longer-distance running races, given the wear and tear on your legs and joints, you have to be mindful.

    I know quite a few guys who were running fanatics in their 30s and 40s who have already had knee replacements or have suffered other injuries (Achilles tendon tears, etc) that have permanently stopped their running careers.

    Less is sometimes more. It doesn't mean that you have to stop running, but don't over-do it. The effects are compounded over time. Lots of stretching and cross training can help.

    There are some, myself included, that believe that running competitively increases your probability of having running injuries (overtraining injuries).

    Competitive running not only means running in races but competing against yourself; for example, feeling the need to run faster than you have in the past.

    Noncompetitive running means running purely for the physical and mental health benefits. For me that means running for 30 minutes 3 times a week. I use a heart rate monitor to try and avoid running too slowly, but generally, slower is better than faster.

    Some people have trouble maintaining the motivation to run if they're not running competitively; I think that would suck and am glad that I run simply for the joy of running.

    First, congrats on completing the half! Glad you had a good race.

    Set some goals based on your experience at Cheltenham. What could you have done better? Figure that out and then plan how to fix it at Nottingham.

    You can also set a goal time that is better than what you ran at Cheltenham.

    If they have a shorter race being run simultaneously, can you switch to it?

    And last resort...since you're probably pre-registered, go pick up your race packet and race shirt, then watch and cheer the racers instead of racing, and enjoy the post race eats.

    I totally feel ya. Last year, I did a 10K run like almost every other month. This year.. ONE. Trying to get my motivation back. But the only way to do that is to actually do a run. I'm pretty sure it will suck. But that will just motivate me to try harder on the next one. Good luck. icon_cool.gif

    I understand what you ALL are talking about. I lost motivation after running my 1st TOUGH MUDDER (12mi. Run with 20 Obstacles along the way) with my brother this past June. It was a goal I had worked up to, and once it was done it was like, " Now what..??" I didn't go to the gym hardly after that, excpet maybe 2x's a week, I just lost interest in training. I didn't train hard enough for my 1st. TM and I suffered from sore calves for almost a week, and felt a little "less than" because I needed help with the Upper Body Obstacles.

    I read that they are having a Tough Mudder closer to my home NEXT June and I started training for that 2 weeks ago. I am re-motivated to run it again next year and have found a workout friend to run it with me. HELL, I have even thought about running one ever year while I am in my 40's, which means 9 MORE, if my body keeps up and lets me. It is a bit of a mind game with yourself to stay motivated... I think.

    Thanks guys - there were some brilliant tips there! I think this is the last time I do 3 half marathons so close together! However, I'm slowly getting my running mo-jo back, just by the fact I've had to chase up my race track and starting to drink lots of water etc during the week. I think once I get my number on, I'll be ready. Awesome motivation work guys!

    not sure you into full blown over training syndrome, perhaps. what i do know is that post race, the body needs some recovery time. some say you need one day of recovery for one mile of an event. so with a half marathon, you'd need 13 days of recovery. so you do need to take it easy and expect to feel a little (or a lot) spent during these recovery days.
    good luck this sunday; and your body will tell you if you can run full out, versus running an easy half race.

    Ugh running sucks, I can't pace myself. I don't know how. One lap i'll run in 58 seconds another in 1:05 and then it goes down from there haha

    Slowly coming back - playing the Clash helps (great band). I think this is the LAST time I do half marathons with two weeks between! I'm doing the Birmingham one 4 weeks later! That's it after that....

    WTF are you timing yourself for? Just run for fun at a relaxed pace. You're not on TV.

    Trying to pass this physical test for a certain unit i want to get into haha
