Lots of stretching. I had a fill-in instructor for kickboxing that had a nice build and was amazing flexible.

stretch for half an hour a day every day. in a few months you will be able to do the splits.

stretching hurts if it doesnt hurt you aren't doing it right.

true- but there's a difference between bearably sore and unbearably painful- obviously, let it 'hurt so good' but don't force the stretches or you'll do damage. slow and easy's the way- it takes time but the cumulative effect of practicing every day will get u there. make sure you warm up a bit first- its dangerous to stretch cold muscles.

taking a good yoga class helps too

I know a girl who had her hip broken like that. she was being stretched by a teacher prior to a balet audition and had her leg on a chair and in a split and her hips broke.

for a good read by a guy who knows a fair bit about the subject

interestingly neither discuss the topic of traffic cones or dildos ...

hi,
If you work 5 days every week you win in flexibility, I think the most important you dont force.

If BigMike learns to do the splits (with those big scrumptious thighs) I suggest making a youtube video to demonstrate the newly found ability. And perhaps some pictures too. And don't forget to wear nothing more than some undersized underwear for the process.

You can definitely learn to do the splits! Some great suggestions have already been mentioned here, but you basically have to do the stretches every day. (I recommend twice a day for 15-20 mins).

Also, assuming you do weight training, it's important to stretch immediately afterwards - even if you only have time for 5 minutes. The strength training actually counteracts the stretching, so if you don't combine the two you lose a lot of mobility.

Yoga is great, but you won't be able to do the splits just from doing yoga. The stretches are more specific than a yoga class can provide.

Good luck

From my experience as a former dancer who now does a lot of yoga, some guys can eventually do the splits (sometimes just one leg and not the other...for me straddle splits are the hardest) and some can't. Whether you ultimately are able to do full splits or not, getting limber will help with all sports and help decrease the chance of injury. Good luck!

if u stretch for a bit every day, u'll be able to do a split but prob just on one leg. that means putting only one leg in front, usually ur best leg. some people can never do a middle split because they start stretching too late and u have to manipulate ur hip structure to be able to do one properly! b.t.w going through the pain of stretching just to do a split for the sake of doing one, e.g to show off, is pointless and a waste of time. a split doesnt really impress n e one coz a lot of people can do them! if u need to be flexible for a sport like kickboxing, then it's worth stretching.
p.s. u'll never be able to do what im doing in my pic ('that thing that the pussycat dolls girl does') coz u have to start stretching at a much younger age!...(in case u were wondering)

Oh please, don't act like it's too late or you're so special cuz a young age story.

I took gymnastics when I was very young and I was naturally a little more flexible (some people are) I didn't do anything really for like 10 yrs and I got into stretching last year and have really increased my flexibility. I am SOO close to doing a split. I am short, and maybe that helps, but I think by doing it every day for a half and hour and holding stretches for about 30 seconds, anyone can be flexible. Don't forget LOTS of water and eating fruits and veggies.

get on youtube and search for contortionist training. you would never consider a 180 a split anymore! it must be beyond 180 and WAY more.
Oct 09, 2009 5:27 AM GMT
Absolutely. I've pretty much always been able to do them, and I have thicker, muscular legs.

<---------------- but i don't have much muscle. just stretch everyday to uncomfortableness, but not so far it's painful.
Oct 09, 2009 5:32 AM GMT
There is no qay I could ever do them, and don't want to. I would be worried I couldn't get up
