My friends and I are planning a week-long vacation next year during Spring Break. The group is half gay, half straight (but oh so gay friendly!), full of drinkers, partiers, loungers, shoppers, sunbathers, adventure seekers and social butterflies. Right now, the group is split...which city do you think would be more fun?

Based on your description of the group going, Cancun sounds like your best option.

You can party in both places. PV is more beautiful. If some in the group are more culturally inclined there are great art galleries and restaurants. But if you just want a crazy party Myrtle beach experience in Mexico, go to Cancun, stay there and never venture into the nearby historically rich surroundings to the south and west.

    Go to Acapulco; here's why:
    http://www.acapulco-on-line.com/villasleo.html

Acapulco is full of these spacious villas for rent (my grandparents have had a place there for decades, as do my parents):

The one above, for example, is three properties adjacent to each other:
    Sleeps up to 26 people;
Fully staffed (buy all of your groceries, liquor the first day); the staff will make three meals a day, prepare and serve all of your drinks, clean, and even do laundry.

See the price for those entire 12 bedrooms? $1,100 per day, divided by 20? Try that at a hotel, where you won't have anything like the privacy, luxury, and attentiveness you'll have at one of these places.

Puerto Vallarta is "nice"; Cancun is "nice", but nothing like the VIEW of the Bay of Acapulco you'll get from these homes in Las Brisas.

If you don't like the look of this, try

I can't speak on Puerto Vallarta but my partner at the time and I went to Cancun during the height of the pig flu scare so we literally had the whole beach to ourselves. We stayed away from the American stuff on the main drag since I can get that here and didn't fly 2000 miles jus to eat at Wendy's. We went into the city and partied with the locals. If you have spanish spreakers in your party thas gonna be a good thing. They had two gay/bi clubs there that were jammin. Also the marketplace is fun during the day. Chichen Itza is very close and defiantly is worth the day trip to see the Mayan Wonder of the World.

Either way make sure you exchange your money in the States and use pesos out there. They take Dollars but they charge way more in dollars than in pesos. for the same thing.

Not possible this time around. We're celebrating a birthday, and the birthday boy has his heart set on one of these two. Thanks though, good points!

My vote would be for PV! I have only been there nice, but want to go back badly. It is very gay friendly. There is a lot of history to see throughout the town. Great nightlife!

Full disclosure -- I have never been to Cancun. The only other place I have been to in Mexico is Cabo and I much preferred PV.

Either way you will be going to a beach in Mexico, so it is a win either way.....good luck!

Just to say that my late mother liked hanging out in Puerto Vallarta. She learned Spanish so she could get more of a kick out of it.

Las Brisas (above) is great, and another alternative you can check out is the Villa Vera. I've stayed here all my life and like it as an alternative to the mega high-rises. There are suites with shaded pools, villas with private pools and and small homes
on a hilly 15 acres that overlook Acapulco Bay. The complex consists of 67 rooms, 20 swimming pools (11 of which are private), two professional tennis courts, a spa and a good, fully equiped gym.

I've been to PVTA a few times and love it! It has something for everyone and is very gay friendly. The restaurants are great and they know how to serve some mean cocktails. Cancun in my opinion (I've been there a few times as well) is too touristy and frankly if you're looking for something that reminds you of home, then stay in the states. Have fun wherever you go!

You're thinking of "Las Brisas" the hotel, I am talking about the fraccionamiento (the "neighborhood") where there are many of these privately-owned mansions for rent.

I've been in Cancun 3x and I had so much fun. I've been to Puerto Vallarta 2x and it's mesmerizing. I love both but I highly suggest Cancun because the beaches are nicer and the clubs are amazing. They have a better hotels drinks included.icon_biggrin.gif

Don't accept ANY drinks from someone you don't know. Have fun and be safe.

Cancun is better if you like the beach. Water is warmer and clearer. Ive been to the other on a cruise after going through the Panama Canal and noticed a big differance in water temps and clarity.

I'm assuming everyone is responsible for their own air fare, right? Not knowing what city/cities the group is departing from, that could play a part in the final destination. That is if cost is a concern.

The replies here are fairly even between Cancun and Puerto Vallarta, with other suggestions thrown in. My thinking is if the majority of the travelers live on the east coast, Cancun would be a better choice, simply because of the cost of the air. On the other hand, if most are west coast based, then PV is the selection.

Availability of flights also should be examined. More flights arrive/depart from Cancun than Puerto Vallarta. Your chances of nonstop flights are better through Cancun. This again depends on where everyone is departing from.

In the travel industry, I have sold Cancun many, many more times than Puerto Vallarta. There are far more "affordable" hotels in Cancun, simply because of the number of resorts there and that is helpful not knowing what everyone's travel budget is.

You will like both destinations, but on a personal and professional level, I would go with Puerto Vallarta simply because is is less congested and touristy than Cancun.

Good luck. If I can be of some help with resort suggestions, please e-mail me here.

Puerto Vallarta is much more GAY but I really love Cancun especially south in the Maya Riviera area. The water and beaches are spectacular. icon_biggrin.gif

I'd rather go to Cancun over P.V. (Acapulco is an even more fun and beautiful choice, but if you're focusing on just these two: Cancun is my choice (and I've been to both quite a few times). There is a beautiful retreat I love called Esencia, which is on a private 50 acre estate of green gardens at the Xpu-Ha beach. There are only 29 rooms. This was the villa of a duchess from Italy. Away from all the negative aspects of Cancun - Esencia is Heaven on Earth.
