I know I am on a hiatus, but I just can't keep this question to myself and need feedback from other homos.

I have four older brothers and I am right handed, and the order of orientation, from oldest to youngest, goes straight, straight, straight, bisexual and finally gay - me.

Is the older brother effect real? how many older brothers do you have? Are you right handed?

Also, I am thinking of switching my hands, trying to write with my left hand, will that possibly make me start using my left hemisphere more and possibly convert my sexual orientation then?

    Couldn't hurt to try.

I have two other brothers. They are older then me, but I'm actually the only left handed in my immediate family. And the only gay guy too besides my cousin that's on my dads side.

    Does that give any help?

There is another thread, about the oldest, middle, youngest sibling. If you search for it, you can find it. You may seek answers there.

    1. Having older brothers as a possible cause is part of an epigenetic hypothesis for the causes of homosexuality. It may very well be close to the best explanation. In epigenetics genes are turned on and off by methyl molecules and several proteins. If this is the case then all of your brothers likely have the same gene but factors in utero indicate that too many males have been born, thus additional children are more likely to express the gay gene. There are a lot of reasons why this mechanism can help facilitate the functioning of a population of social animals.

    2. Brain lateralization does not actually function like that. Structures which control behavior will likely be on both sides. In other words if a structure says, 'like dudes', it will be represented on both sides of the brain. Sexuality is also more complex than just making use of your cerebral cortex. Subcortical structures, such as your olfactory bulbs, are known to play an important role in sexuality and likely play a major role in the expression of homosexual behavior. In other words brain lateralization may be correlated with homosexuality but is not likely to be the cause (very much so). Further you already access both hemispheres. People aren't actually 'right-brained' or 'left-brained'. These notions have been popularized by pop-science to sell a culture not unlike horoscopes. Dominance of the hemispheres varies a great deal between tasks completed by the brain. Learning to use a hand other than your dominant hand will only stimulate the parts of your brain (motor and sensory homunculus in the parietal lobe) responsible for that function... not the whole hemisphere.

2 brother, I'm the oldest and only one gay, we all 3 right handed.

In my whole family, around 25 cousins, there's nobody gay or out, and my gaydar it's pretty good. They are all mostly married.
I do have one aunt and one uncle that never got married or haven't dated anyone in decades... lol

I don't think some people understand that the idea is it just increases the chance....

    1st born - 3%
    2nd born - 4%
    3rd born - 5.3%
    4th born - 7.1%
    5th born - 9.5%

So yeah its entirely possible to be the first born and gay, or the 5th born and straight.

If you're the first born and gay, well congrats you beat the odds! icon_lol.gif
