For several months now I have been really into religion, philosophy, and mathematics. I ended up being drawn to the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. It had been so long since I had first studied it, a refresher in the face of DOMA falling was in order.

What I discovered was completely unexpected and has the potential to change the historical reference it has had towards gays. Apparently the current city that Gomorrah is said to be lacks the geographical markers that are described during the biblical times. That has prompted many investigations into other places for it's location. A French archeological team came across the Syrian town of Emar. The translation of Emar and geographical markers were more consistent with Gomorrah. They started excavations I think in the early 80's. Unfortunately, they were under a time constraint to recover the artifacts because of water that was rising in the wake of a damn that had just been built which created what is now called.....Lake Assad. A new town on the shoreline of Lake Assad was named Emar in it's place.

Unfortunately, the site which they stored the collected artifacts was looted and sold on the grey market. Over the past 10 years, a historical group demanded the Syrian government assist the reclaiming of these artifacts. They've found all but 1 of the tablets. They have been defaced and vandalized, but are currently being restored.

Of other interest, was the archaeologist claims of a temple being at the site. The temple had a deity of Ba'al (representative of the man of the house, husband) and Ischtar (woman of the house, wife). Kinda of odd, but from my interpretation...it seems like a temple for the idolatry of marriage.

Personally, I thought the whole gay marriage agenda was a ridiculous waste of time, money and resources. Arguing over the semantics of the word "marriage" was kinda selfish. Having the meaning of it, LOVE, torn down and fought over just didn't seem worth the fight and anguish of the millions of Christian Americans that opposed it. I also understood the Bible to say that man should not lie with man as with woman. In reality, we just wanted to have equality to have our union recognized by our government. That could have been solved a whole lot sooner had our government not perpetuated and encouraged "gay Marriage". My belief was they should have separated church and state by just creating a new law to express union such a "domestic partnership" for everyone. Problem solved. Can't argue that! Marriage returns to the word representing the union a couple makes with their higher power. I think that is how God intended it.

I've heard that there will be news that comes out that will have a profound affect on the view of Christianity. I can't help but wonder and have a theory that Gomorrah may actually represent the first governmental contract to marriage. It's not far off base given that many people marry for the wrong reasons, don't take it as seriously as they should as well as the steady increase of divorce rates. I also wonder if the statement about man not lying with man the same as woman as reference to mean "not married", rather than "not at all".

I have no idea if a lot of people know about this are even are speculating....so, this is MY theory!! Date, mark, time.... I'm looking forward to what they find when they get these tablets restored....a huge mystery will be solved, the translation has never really been directly defined to mean homosexuality. May be worth post-poning that wedding LOL!!

Well, that's quite the theory, although it's extremely America-centric, among other things.

Ba'al was a word used for a god but also for a few people, if you look up the history of the word. As for Ishtar, she was a near equivalent of Venus. She had scores of lovers, was a god of war as well as love, and sexuality. Read up on her relationship with Tammuz. icon_wink.gif

Up here we've had equality which includes marriage for over 8 years. The religious right wing of the US however, thinking it exists alone on the planet, is making it (equality for gay people) into a huge armaggedon-like farce in a completely un Christian manner, taking a rather amusing at times, horrible at at other times, Islamic fundamental stance.

You know, in the bible it's pretty cut and dried about divorce.

Here: Matthew 19: " Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. 9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

So now let's look at what the bible says to do about that adultery Matthew just mentioned:

"Exodus 20:14 "You shall not commit adultery."

Deuteronomy 22:22 "If a man is found sleeping with another man's wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die."

Leviticus 20:10 "If a man commits adultery with another man's wife--with the wife of his neighbor--both the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death."

Proverbs 6:32 "But a man who commits adultery lacks judgment; whoever does so destroys himself."

Right, so adultery (divorce according to Matthew who said Jesus said that) is conveniently overlooked by your religious numbnuts, and attention diverted to gays. How wag-the-dog can you get? icon_wink.gif

Semantics or not, no one is ever going to say, "We're civilly partnered" instead of "We're married".

This is all interesting from a historical perspective, but I can't live my life based on a book that was written by some old men who couldn't even figure out indoor plumbing.

hey, I didn't say I was Christian or not......just a guy checking a story out and thought I would share!! I'm not a religious scholar or even pretend to be. I'm not trying to say the bible is for or against gays or that getting a divorce is a sin.....i'm just sharing something I thought interesting and had never heard before. Period, the end.

as far as worrying about it or not, it was just something I was curious about and decided to look up. Just as some of you might want to know what other songs Miley Cirrus sings besides wrecking ball!!

I just think it's cool that some evidence is presenting itself to debunk something that was once believed. We could all use a fresh perspective, including this gay community.

I also wasn't speaking against human rights! I'm against "marriage" and any other word that crosses the layman's use of or the religious use of with the legal use of such word. This case is a testament to that. Why spend millions of dollars over a WORD!!! Seriously!! Perhaps when the gay community looks back on this in the future they may come to realize just how many gay families were in a position that necessitated federal protection during the fight for "marriage". My best friend passed and his partner got nothing. Perhaps we might realize that what took years for us to win the love of the the American public, didn't really require any of those that we won the hearts of to feel hurt by a cause that conflicted with their beliefs. It also wasn't necessary to have those that didn't support us to despise us even more, rather than to embrace us. After all, we're all in this life together.

If this was a human rights issue, as what I also believed, the gay movement should have fought this battle from the civil rights platform.....not marriage! After all, we were always protected by the Constitution.

kevinap, this: 'Why spend millions of dollars over a WORD!!!'

Any idea how much creating a separate but equal institution like marriage costs? Lots of paperwork and lawmaking should give you a hint.

Any idea how much it costs to simply extend marriage to gay people?

The sin of Sodom is clearly documented in the bible already. And is the very sin that Xristians continually commit.

Ezekiel 16:49-50 49 Behold this was the iniquity of Sodom thy sister, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance, and the idleness of her, and of her daughters: and they did not put forth their hand to the needy, and the poor. 50 And they were lifted up, and committed abominations before me: and I took them away as thou hast seen.

Mathew 10:14-15 14 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words: going forth out of that house or city shake off the dust from your feet. 15 Amen I say to you, it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

    The sin was inhospitabilty.
